I'm sure this has been asked before. Which new led tricolor? I've previously replaced the incandescent bulb with tricolor led bulb, but now the bulb holder corroded, the lens is getting brittle, so I thought better to replace the lot.

I'd prefer a lower power consuming Led., but which one, they vary in price from 13quid to 350 or more.

What are the panels experiences with different brands and price ranges?

Delighted with and no regrets with the NASA SUPERNOVA TRI colour. Whether true or not some idea that adding anchor light added failure risk or obsolescence if one part failed, pointed us in a separate anchor light, low level one.

We have the aquasignal 34 also - was straightforward to install and not crazy expensive compared to others. It replaced a lopolight which failed (water ingress) and I couldn't stomach replacing one at their prices (even with the discount they offered as it was out of warranty).

Aquasignal 34. Good vertical angle - useful when heeling.
Apologies for digressing from the OP's question, but if you're heeling that much, you're two reefs too late.
Back to the OP. Some fine sandpaper to clean up the contacts, smear some vasoline. Sorted

Nope, the middle has corroded away to nothing, so there's nothing supporting the bulb underneath, it's just given way. I don't think a rub with emery paper will make much difference...

Very poor quality for a marine product.

If your existing lamp is an Aquasignal there is a benefit in fitting an Aquasignal 34 nas a replacement. The “pcd” and orientation of the fixing holes will probably be the same. Saves a lot of hassle when working at a masthead changing units. Only screwdrivers will be needed.

That's a good point. I'll have a look at that one.

Fitted the nasa led tri/white unit three seasons ago, working fine with no problems, interesting way to switch between tri and white by reversing polarity, means only a two core cable needed.
Can't remember exact length of cable unit comes with, but certainly had to cut a fair amount off for my 30' mast. As with Comrade Red I use connectors at deck level to simplify mast stepping.

NASA Supernova fitted a few years ago now. Short cable included so it expects a splice at the masthead. 2 core cable as there is a polarity changeover switch at the mast base.

Yes the NASA one has about 6" of cable attached which is potted so you can't replace it with a longer one. This means you have no choice but to join the cable at the top of the mast, and I suspect is the root cause of many issues with the units since most people probably can't make a watertight join. Otherwise I really liked the unit for the 10 minutes I had it on the old boat before handing over the keys :ROFLMAO: Nice and bright and seemed well sealed.

Yes you are correct, I forgot that it's supplied with only short tails, as long as the method of joining to the mast cable is well made there shouldn't be a problem, though I would suggest to Nasa that they increase the price by £10 or so and supply the unit with at least 15m of cable, it would make it a much more sanitary fixing.

The Nasa Supernova top unscrews. On the tricolour anyway, I replaced the (untinned) cable. Anchor/tri looks identical design.

Very happy with the Tri, bright, low power, all that you expect from LEDs.
