Trying to get a spares package together to take with us in perparation for taking our new boat from Tobermory to Largs and was wondering if anybody can point me in the right direction as to which impeller to buy.A picture of the engine from the seller indicates the pump has six screws holding the cover on and the engine was new in 2001/2.The choice seems to between a six blade or a ten blade.Which one is it?

I own a beta BZ482 and if you call Beta with the WOC number then they'll tell you what impeller it needs.....
Alternatively PM me an I'll send you the equivalents parts list that I have.....

Thanks to those who have replied so quickly. The problem being the boat is in Tobermory and i'm in Glasgow so any engine or water pump numbers which may be on the engine will remain unknown untill we pick it up next Sunday. All i have to go on is this picture.

The OP would be best advised to contact Beta (who are invariaby helpful). They might be able to advise on the basis of age rather than WOC number if this isn't available.

The issue is that Beta used to fit Jabsco pumps as standard, but now seem to fit Johnson. I'm not sure when the change occurred, but certainly after 2004 when my engine was new. The impellers between the two (at least with the BD1005) look similar but are not interchangeable.

And, Nathan, why don't you have a spare impeller on board, anyway? ;)

Macd if you read the post you will find that we have not taken posession of the boat yet so do not know what spares are on board!! hence the origional question as i want to take an engine spares package with me.I am not new to this game and are trying to be as prepared as possible! I have phoned Beta and they could not say unless i knew for sure what type of pump it had.

Go to your local supplier ask for both and arrange a refund on the incorrect one .
I am sure that most will do this for you.

Yup buying both was plan B if it could not be positively identified.Even if the 'wrong' type could not be exchanged for the sake of £50 its a no brainer to set out without having the right spare.

You could ask Tobermory Phil of this parish to have a look for you.

Nathan: humble apologies. I didn't notice the "new".
I've just checked: Jabsco definitely has three fasteners for face-plate, Johnson definitely has six.

Thanks to Burnham Bob for forwarding a pic of his set up.His pump looks like what we have (six cover screws)and he uses a six bladed impeller.Just heard back from previous owner and he says its a ten bladed in it just now.I've bought both types to be covered and on looking and measuring them the width ,thickness and diameter of bush appears to be the same.Confused now, does this mean previous owner has fitted a ten blade into a johnson pump and if is the case it would appear that it works well

i think there's a jabsco impellor that fits the johnson pump and maybe that's ten blades as opposed to the johnson six. there has been a thread on here about johnson impellors losing blades and maybe the previous owner fitted a jabsco in preference. however, the last johnson parts i fitted worked fine and didn't lose blades. i would have thought a ten blade meant more blade less water in the pump body and therefore lower throughput but i could be wrong. if it's not overheating then it's working fine and if it ain't broke........

Mine was the 6 blade (same age of engine) - there is a 10 blade that fits but I found the engine would over heat if worked a little hard - went back to the original 6 blade impellor and overheating problem resolved (chappie in the swindelery swore the 10 blade one was an "upgrade")

Nathan: there's a bit more to it than the dimensions of the impeller and number of vanes. Material is significant, too: some are neoprene, some another sort of synthetic rubber. From what I remember when I changed pumps, one of the brands can tolerate either, one not. To muddy the waters a litle more, as Burnham Bob wrote, Jabsco certainly make impellers for Johnson pumps.

I don't doubt the impellers you've bought will at least get you by until you can ascertain the precise pump type. Enjoy the new boat.
