Which engine / supplier?

We're less than a month from the Boat Show. I suspect most suppliers will be running discounts on engines etc, so why not spend a day going round and eyeballing the suppliers one by one?

...also caveat emptor... My previous boat had a new Vetus M2.16 fitted when I got her with <50hrs on the clock. The yard that fitted it ( I had all the bills) charged the price of the engine unit only, and relied on their margin for the installation. They obviously were desperate since they changed out the (supplied) Vetus mounts for very cheap and cheerfuls from somewhere else to make a bit more money... As the job was not for me I will not mention the name here, but they were not in Essex

nanni vs beta.horses for courses.my 50hp beta pushes my rival 41 up to full hull speed 7knots plus.at 1600 = 5knots for 1.7lts per hr all with cleanish bottom.over 4yrs old never over heated (painted the engine bay when installed) and is as clean as no leaks or drips.never had a nanni on my boat so can not comment.anode = one nut !.allso think its a good idea to check heat exchanger now and then.so same engine block i belive(could be wrong)different cooling system mine works !

I believe that Nanni and Beta are the same Kubota engines, but marinised by different companies.

Nanni is French and Blue. :(

Beta is British and Red. :D

Because of the different marinisation there are dimensional differences which might be important in a tight situation.

FWIW I visited the Kubota Stand at the Royal Show and asked if they had a workshop manual for the 1005D model(base engine for beta and nanni 28hp. You have to get them from the mariniser was the reply, but then," what do you want one for?" "You won't need one for at least 10 years!"

Robert: I may have missed where you are located but if you are on the South Coast a really good engineer who will fit and install Yanmars or Bukhs is John Cutler Marine - based near Chichester/Emsworth area. My brother-in-law had a Yanmar fitted to his Sabre 27 and is very happy with it. Fresh water cooled by the way.

Hello everyone, although I have been following the ECF for a few months this is my first post. I bought a cheap Westerly Centaur last year and after the first year's sailing I have decided that I need to renew the old Volvo MDB2 with something more modern. Would anyone like to give me advice on what to go for and a reliable person/company to install it? Although cost is always important, getting the right engine fitted properly is the main thing. The boat is on the Blackwater so any recommendations need to be within travelling distance.

Thanks, Bob

We have a Beta 13.5hp which we are very happy with (installed for the previous owner shortly before we bought the boat). Doing the heat exchanger has not proved a problem. Never had any issues with impellors (but I change ours annually), and I read somewhere Nanni use the same water pump, anyway. As someone has said, the anode in the heat exchanger is just a single bolt (it has the anode in the end of it).

Beta are very knowledgeable and helpful on the phone, and send out spares the same day (from Gloucester). They have a website where you can download manuals and spares lists, etc. I've heard several times that they do significant discounts in boat show special deals on new engines.

As others have said, Nanni are the same basic engines, just the marinisation is different. I've heard it said that the marinisation is better engineered, but I've also heard that getting spares can sometimes be an issue. I've heard aspersions cast on the importers, who's name escapes me for the moment but they are in the Norfolk Broads somewhere. On the other hand we know another boat owner who had a Nanni fitted by them, and thought they were easy to deal with and had done an OK job (though he did later discover the engine controls had been bodged).

That'll be A R Peachment. Nanni replaced BMC as pretty much the standard Broads cruiser engine...

Good to see that this thread is still going and still generating useful information. Had Mike French down to see the boat today and will get a written quote from him in due course. Used Tesco Clubcard vouchers to get tickets for the Boat Show and will see what is on offer there. It's been a few years since I have been anyway so am looking forward to it! Thanks to everyone who has contributed so far, I really appreciate your efforts.
