Which boat?

I`m currently saving up for a sports cruiser and will have £22000 to spend. It will be moored at windermere and as i`m a novice in sailing was wondering what would be a suitable boat. I`m not bothered about power as its for the family but needs to be 4-6 births and 22ft-28ft long. Luckily my brother in law`s father owns a mariner at the lakes(this is what got me wanting a boat)but would like other peoples opinions on the matter. I like Searays a lot and Sunseekers, are these boats reasonable to maintain and are there any things to look out for when viewing. I`m also curious on the amount of insurance i would have to pay,it would be nice to know roughly how much before i spent all my money, anybody got a rough guess,is it like car premiums which can be £1000.
Thanks Mojo

MoJo - can't help you much with the boats as I'm a novice too. However insurance should be a pleasent surprise. I insured a 25' Rinker 250 (4 berth cruiser) with a 5.7l engine for £245 - insured value £15k. Bearing in mind that there is a sharp intake of breath when your boat goes over 17kts (not something that the raggies normally worry about) - I had some conditions applied about passing RYA quals. etc. but nothing troublesome. I swapped the Rinker last month for a 32' 6 berth thing and insureance is £425 - insured value £70k.

Loads of boats in the price range you're looking at - I'd suggest you get a copy of "Boats under 15,000" (or search the "Buying a Boat" option). You will need to keep back about £5k for bits, even if your brother in law gives you morrings at cost.

Also worth noting - if he bug bites (and it will, I can almost assure you) then you'll need / want (same thing) a bigger boat <G>. Up North (Lakes) I'd have thought you might get more annual use out of a small flybridge cruiser (Bayliner?) - try to stay clear of twin 7.4 Mercruisers unless your other brother in law owns a bunkerage facility...

The correct phraseology is "Are we insured..." NOT "Were we insured"
(IMHO, BTW, FWIW and NWGOI)

Isn't there already, or about to be, a speed limit on Windermere which would render all the above boats useless there?

If its that shambolic then why bother posting on it. I`ve simply asked for help and advice and not a poor attempt at sarcasm.

Thanks Barry,we`ve all got to start somewhere, although i`ll give this forum a wide birth now seen as i`ve only left one posting and i`ve managed to find two muppets already. The thought of reading their drivel reminds me of the numptys on the football forums. I`ll get help elsewhere and leave the numptys to improve on their sarcasm, sad really.

I hope you wern't refering to me, as I was defending your right to ask the question on any forum you wanted! I couldn't see any other muppets, so thought you must be thinking of me! By the way I play the drums like animal if it's any help! and what drivel were you refering to, who's attempting to be sarcastic now! Also if you can't take a joke it might be better if you did sod off elsewhere!<P ID="edit"><FONT SIZE=-1>Edited by ccscott49 on Thu May 2 22:15:24 2002 (server time).</FONT></P>

Go on Colin bite his bum, I'll lend ya me hounds - they'll finish him off......think he must need new specs if he thought your original reply was aimed at him!

A word in your shell like Mojo2002, the way to get folk on your side is NOT to flame them at the earliest opportunity...works wonders - Sometimes <G>

As posted earlier, it is correct that a 10mph speed limit is to be imposed on Windermere in 2005, so you may want to think about that. On the plus side it may mean there'll be some good deals on boats there.

As earlier suggested, a Bayliner cruiser may be a good option as there is a Bayliner dealer on Windermere so lots of them about and you get a lot for your money. There is also a Sealine dealer there too and generally there are quite a few boats for sale on the lake.

I got a Bayliner 2655 from Windermere last year, which has 6 berths (2 more than most boats of it's length) and loads of storage space, for less than you're looking to spend, and it's been fantastic. Insurance was under £200.

Whatever you choose, I would recommend that you get a thorough survey done, I can give you the name of the guy I used if you want, and he was very good.

I havn`t come on here to ruffle anybody`s feathers only for some pointers. I`m sorry Colin but i thought you were taking the mick out of me aswell. He may not have been but it looked like it to me so i replied acordingly, like yourself when telling me to sod off cos i got sarcastic with you. I can safely say that when i posted my question i didn`t think the thread would end up like this,no harm done anyway.

Cheers for the warm welcome (tongue placed firmly in cheek)

If you stay around, you may notice I don't tend to take the mick, hardly ever in fact. I just thought you deserved better treatment, asking a sensible question, some people like to have demarcation disputes, killed the ship building industry and no place here either! Good luck with all you endeavour!
Colin.

Remember depreciation, and the speed limit, it may be that a Sealine has a more general resale appeal, ie lake, river, coastal and cross channel, Bayliner used to, may have altered now, have a light weight American construction reputation.
But at the end of the day look at as many boats as you can, including what you think you do not want,. Then pick out points you like, and points that you do not like, you then build up a profile and one boat you go on has a lot of the points that are your positive ones, and your there with a boat.
At the end you have to live on the boat, no one else.

All the best

Brian
