I'm looking to buy a hand held anemometer.

There appear to be basically two sorts:

Some that have 3 rotating cups on the top. Now that makes sense, as that would appear to give the correct reading regardless of what way you point the thing. But these tend to be a lot more expensive.

The cheaper ones instead have what can best be described as a "fan" through a hole in the top of them. These are a lot cheaper, but surely the accuracy of the reading will depend which way you point it? i.e point it side on to the wind and it will read virtually nothing?

I can't see from a manufacturing point of view why the sort with 3 cups on the top should be so much more expensive to make to justify the higher price.

All I want it for is to better understand wind speed and relate that to observed sea state to understand what weather we are (capable of) sailing in. I sometimes get the impression the sea state suggests a higher wind than we are really seeing.

How about one of these ...

s'what I have but I paid less than that for it earlier this year on ebay.

.

Vic, we had one of these on the boat used by Race Officers for use in the Victory Class races but it didn't turn out to be very accurate.

We use rule of thumb:~ Occasional White Horses Force 3, White Horses = Force 4, Many White Horses = Force 5. :D

...someone will follow up with a witty post I expect...:D

Anenometer

I say forget it. Around here we can get wind speed from various sources with history. So after a sail you can go back and find what you sailed in and of course you will know by then how you survived.
Your sails are your best anenometer. The mast actually if it is vertical ...light wind If it is at 45 degrees ...too much wind. You will soon get the hang of it. A deck level anenometer is not always representative of what is hitting the sails anyway. good luck and keep that wallet stowed olewill

I know they say you can take a white horse anywhere .... but keel boat racing ... that's ridiculous
