Hello,

I'm new to this forum, thanks for allowing me to join.
I have a question on how to best repair the rail of our Annapolis Wherry. Attached is a pick.
I was thinking of cleaning the loose wood and applying epoxy with a clamp. Any other ideas?

Thanks!

Do you know what caused the crack? If stress related then cutting a length out and scarfing a new piece in would be the best. If caused by a direct force (hit by something) then you could try gluing and clamping +/- a mechanical fix such as a plate or a butterfly graving piece. As we demonstrate to students a good glued surface using modern adhesives is nearly always stronger than the base wood.

That is structural so needs fixing properly especially on a fast rowing boat like that, othrewise gunwales will flex when rowing & it will get worse. You can cut a section of rail out & scarf a new bit in, minimum taper would be 7:1 so if its an inch thick 7" long each side of the crack a total of 14" if the crack is taken as the centre. Glue in with epoxy, microfibres & a bit of silica to thicken it up, will be as strong as new.
