Madame's birthday is coming up. We'll be on the boat at Hardway that evening, and don't want to have to drive too far. Where in Gosport would you take her for dinner?

The Jolly Roger is favourite, distance-wise, but is the food any good? It's been a while since I've eaten there. She doesn't like Chinese, so T&J is out.

Blimey - the Lightship's gone all posh! I probably haven't been there for over 10 years, but it used to be decent nosh at fairly sensible prices. Now it's all pithiviers and frites with prices to match, instead of pie and chips. I'd like to be wrong, but the menu sounds pretentious rather than fine dining.

The JR's looking favourite at the moment, but still interested in alternatives.

Artys, royal clarence. Kind of italian theme food. Good feedback from customers. 20 min walk, 8 by car, 5 by bicycle!

Artie's: Staff won't go the extra inch for you let alone mile. Some weird ingredient choices: who in their right mind puts sugar in mashed avocado
My experience with the Jolly Roger is years old but used to be ok pub grub: nothing special.
The castle is decent and reliable but a little expensive for pub grub.
The two times we've eaten at the light ship in the past couple of years we've been served by 16 year olds who've been nice but mind bendingly clueless which is not what you expect for what they charge
The boathouse in premier is ok but limited choices
If it's a birthday have a look at pebbles in stokes bay. It's a 10 minute drive but view, food and portion sizes are good

It’s been consistently good for us over the last two years, certainly the best quality we’ve had in Gosport. They are still finding their feet in terms of market and unfortunately they’re second fiddle to the Creek which has had consistently terrible service since it opened. Would be nice to see the lightship stay all year rather than the creek and we’d like to see more small plates to go with afternoon drinking but what they have on the menu is excellent.

As a Gosport based boat there is a pub in walking distance over the bridge past Haslar hospital which is good and have had Xmas meal there which well prepared . we avoid the creek now unless having a drink but beer is very limited and they run out of spirits even -due to a variety of poor service issues -it seems under stocked food wise and run by employees as part of a corporate contract which have no interest in building positive feedback from Haslar boat owners. We haven’t visited lightship since its repricing strategy. It’s amazing no one at Haslar hasn’t looked across to old fort at Seaview for a few pointers on how to run a business.
We are trying Aries at Clarence which is good for our Xmas meal and even Haslar yacht club now has Xmas event at Hornet.
I would try Pebbles at stokes bay -been going for years and always reliable and friendly staff plus good food and drinks etc but book -it’s somewhere we actually plan to go whereas the creek is a venue of last resort.
In alverstoke there is a hotel which might be worth a try ? Haven’t been to hotel for years but historically it served good fare
If you catch the green ferry to delights of gunwharf plenty of eateries but Blancs brasserie might be preferred or I think there is a cosy cafe place but can be noisy.
Quite like boathouse at Gosport marina but limited evening opening days I believe but the chef does a good breakfast.more of a lunchtime venue I feel.

Went posh a couple of years ago, removed the visitors moorings, added a large outdoor tent and new decking.

Food is eye watering there now and only fizzy bottled lager. Castle tavern and Great Wall still good though, followed by drinks in Emma's.
