Dear all,

I need to replace the rubbing strake and toe rail of my Macwester 26. Can anyone recommend a source for hardwood on the East coast? I guess Teak will be expensive so was going to use iroko.

Regards,

A number of good wood yards will do it. I got some Iroko from Thorogood (Ardleigh, Colchester) who also do offcuts reasonably. Silverman also does hardwoods

Depends where on the East Coast you are, but if you are close to Maldon, I recommend Causeway Timber. they will cut and plane to dimensions no matter what the size of the order. Also, I once spent over 100 pounds on an order and they offered to deliver it without charge (8 miles). Iroko is an ideal wood.

Iain,

I am based in Colchester, boat in Tollesbury, so will try the yards in Ardleigh and Maldon, but other suggestions greatfully received!

Causeway Timber have sold up and gone - now Travis Perkins and no good to us. We'll miss Causeway , their service was great. Just got some Iroko today from Holden Timber, Duke Street, Ipswich. Price about right. They have a web site holdentimber.co.uk Tel no 01473-286655.

As for Maldon, there is a new DIY shop in the old road leading to where the station used to be - called Riverside ?? DIY I think. The owner of the yard I winter with asked them if they do marine ply/iroko/mahog and was told yes, they intend to - they are just starting up it seems. Don't have a number I'm afraid but they are just on the right as you go down the road (which is opposite the entrance to Tesco's

I got teak from KJ howells in Poole. I sent him a drawing (I wanted an angle section to replace my toerail) and he sent it back mail order. I live in Cumbria so I'm a long way from anywhere but it didn't matter. The only trouble was that the longest length that could be sent by road was 3m so I had six pieces and two scarf joints on each side.

You seem to be getting good local advice.
The East coast to me is Inverness, perhaps stretching down to The Forth.
I have certainly been able to source Iroko (10" x 2" x 14' ) within the last three months in Inverness and (some years ago) in Edinburgh.

The transport costs from here would rule it out for you.

I feel that you may even be able to find teak in Malden. Several (about fifteen) years ago I purchased a large plank of seasoned spruce in Malden to make a new mast.

Have you spoken to Sams Timber in Burnham on Crouch, bought some very nice iroko from him last week, seems to be able to source most things at a good price. He is on the industrial estate on the way up to Burnham Yacht Harbour, past Travis Perkins next turn on the right. the owner is a yachtie who has built his own boat and so is very helpful.
