I have a small trailer sailer. I would like to know how fast and far I am travelling, but I dont want to start cutting holes in the hull to fit through hull paddle wheel.

Does anyone know where I can get a trailing log?

Three Options I'd say

1) Autonnic Research, Tollesbury or Maldon - personal experience: bad technical design and cheaply manufactured + bad customer service

2) Wayfarer model (overhauled) - see PBO ads from former engineer

3) Boat Jumbles

IMHO the wasp is nice but too expensive

Fox's in Ipswich still stock the original Walker Trailing Log but why not just buy a Garmin GPS and read speed off that...as well as getting all the other benefits, like where you are!

Re: How accurate is GPS for speed?

GPS is very accurate for speed, altho it is giving speed over ground and not speed through the water. However if you are doing 4 knots and stop dead the GPS will read zero tho if this happens I would look at the depth sounder instead!

Re: How accurate is GPS for speed?

I agree, if you stop dead "in the water" the GPS should only read 0 if the water is not moving. OK for gravel pits or lakes but not a very frequent experience at sea or on rivers. Our boat has an electronic trailing log and a Walker as a back up ( well it helps pass the time when crossing the channel). Biggest problem is staying polite when all those helpful people tell you you're trailing a line.

We have a competition when leaving Portsmouth; will we be told about the line more often than our Bukh engine steam or vice versa?

I have a Wasp Globemaster log that has only been used once (16nm on the clock) and is still in its box with instructions etc. It's yours for £40 if you want it.
