What's in a name - boats.co.uk

EBY have grown by using technology, they are merely taking it to the next level. We have done likewise & are in the process of investing similar amounts in a similar way. Turnover has doubled for us in the last 3 years, due solely to technology, we intend to increase this multiple by 10 in the next 5. Good luck to them, it is the future of global business.

I think it depends on what you sell.

If it's something affordable, something where it doesn't matter who sells it then you can go for a pile it high, sell it cheap mass market approach.

If you represent the manufacturer of a complex and expensive product where the purchasing decision is as much about on-going support as it is the initial product then I think you have to be a bit more careful about how you go about things.

Porsche and the Autotrader are very different creatures. I would argue that Fairline and Apollo Duck are equally as diverse. There is a danger that EBY models their internet presence on the latter. Not sure how that would sit with me if I was Fairline and EBY were my primary route to market in the Uk (possibly a wider net). I wonder if there is something we don't know?

As a general all things to all men boat brokerage it's a good move.

I also share the view that it was odd to mention the purchase price of the domain name in promotional information.

Ultimately people can do what they want with their lives and businesses. EBY seem to enjoy strong support on here from those who have bought from them so please don't take anything I've said as judgement of their working method. I am merely commenting on this specific change from the viewpoint of an outsider. They have grown strongly and steadily over the years and are no fly by night outfit.

Henry :)

I agree, some things are best on yell.com, others die there, horses for courses. However, I think you will find when the "boys" started to have some say in the running of EBY, they grasped the internet, & it has worked, they are now refining this. On the internet you can market yourself at any level that suits, from low to high, you can also do both (or all) with a little clever marketing. We as a company appeal to the likes of small engineering companies to Ryanair head office in Dublin, Japanese multinationals etc. etc. You don't have to put yourself in a box.

I agree neither the words 'Essex' or 'Boatyards' conveyed what EBY are about so a change was wise.
Anyhow, what they really need is a high class domain like "monacoboatshow.com" (no reasonable offer refused)!

Needs to be an .mc not a .com for credibility I am afraid.....

But if my core business was selling Fairlines I'd want to have 'fairline' in my domain name, perhaps something like "Fairline Yacht Sales", "Fairline Approved" or "Fairline Brokerage".
Maybe they're just preparing for the day when Fairline isn't their core business? After all Essex Boatyards is a name that is inextricably linked with Fairline. Maybe they've got grand ideas about taking more brands?

Could be, it's a fickle industry after all.

But as 'mlines' points out it's easy to start marketing using the url 'fairline.boats.co.uk' or 'boats.co.uk/fairline' or /arvor or whatever other brands they have or take on in the future.

From experience I agree with them.

Our previous company name (33 y/o) is very parochial so following a submission from one of my managers I agreed to a complete change. That was 15 months ago and now we receive several enquiries a week from worldwide and have won contracts in South Africa, Portugal, Abu Dhabi and Jordan.

Same company, same people, same location but our new brand is turning us into global company.

I looked you up, company would look great on a certain rally car.

Is that your passion Paul ?

As our company name is linked to the environment and renewables the perfect sponsorship choice for us is offshore yacht racing, which we have supported for six years now. Check out our news section when you get a chance ;)

Boating and rallying always been my passion, I've just returned to Motorsport this year after a 26 year lay off, I will email you a few pics. I'd say burning a litre a mile in a forest stage is hardly an environmental plus! But we're all entitled to persue what makes us smile, burning 5 litres a mile in a boat is even worse.

Now where do we start. My marketing girl would have a field day with your statement :)))

My clients tend to ignore the boat fuel burn when they are enjoying some top class hospitality on the bay. To be honest, although it's been a while, we just pootle along to the start line, around the bay then off to a restaurant. Fab day out and little fuel burn ;)
