I have no doubt this question has been asked many times in the past but it would be very interesting (to me at least) to know what type/size of boat you live on and how many people on board. eg xxx45 with a crew of two.
And - based on your experience what type of boat you would like to live on?

I have a 39ft catamaran. I started out with a 39ft monomaran and upgraded because of the additional space that a catamaran offers. I am now trying to find the money to upgrade again ~ my dream is another catamaran, circa 55ft long with only two cabins and loads of "living/entertaining" space in the cockpit and saloon.

If this cruising life was all about the sailing, I'd buy another monomaran, but it is not about the sailing. It is all about the lifestyle and the wonderful people that you meet along the way and performance at anchor is the most important thing on my list.

32 foot long keel, she's been my home for 16 years this December. Just me aboard and I've got all the room I need, and I wouldn't change her for any other boat...:D :D

i live on 49ft catamaran, partly because I met up with that guy further up the thread at a boat show and told he me in simliar very certain terms NOT to buy a boat other than a catamaran. So i did, and um, it's fine.

Old 42' Moody cc ketch. 2 humans 2 dogs 2 cats not much room now for anything else after 16 years living onboard. Wouldn't change her for anything else. Not fast but she has seen us through some really bad weather. Comfortable and safe, couldn't ask for more.

Just me living on a Python 27ft twin diesel cruiser, I love the liveaboard life and the people you meet, watching the tides go in and out etc..

I dont need a bigger boat, mines got an aft cabin that i dont really use, but if i did, i'd like a moonraker 36 i think, but thats just dreams anyway, as i'm unlikely to afford the upgrade anyway !

44ft monohull, a design based around a IOR racing boat so less volume than many cruising orientated designs. Sometimes single handed sometimes 2 up..

A fast old lady.

There are lots of things that I like about cats. but to sail well out here in the Caribbean it seems that 45 ft is the minimum.

Myself, wife & 2 jack's have been Liveaboards for just over 4 years. No connection with the Land whatsoever, apart from son's mailing address.
Our 42'' steel ketch is a motor-sailor. Fijamor dates from the 70's but was not commissioned until 94. Long Keel with twin bilge plates. Now fitted out to go anywhere.

We have everything we need for a wonderful lifestyle & enjoy it to the full.

Became Liveaboards for three main reasons, firstly, a life time love of the sea, secondly, our love of sailing and thirdly, to get out of that crazy crazy crazy society they have created.

Would not wish to live any other way or on any other boat.

Jeanneau 45.1

We have lived in Greece aboard "Little Roundtop" our 1995 Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 45.1 full-time since March 2005. She may be a plastic AWB and she certainly won't ever win any races (not with me as skipper anyway) but she is perfect as a home. Roomy & well laid out. We have the 4-cabin version but we took the divider down between the two forward cabins to create a huge sleeping area.

The boat we'd like to live aboard? That's easy, the one we have now!

5 years onboard 33' monohull. Having spent some considerable amount of post sunset research time onboard that fine vessel in the second post I can agree wholeheartedly, performance at anchor is a major factor. Perfect boat would be one that sprouts a second hull just as the anchor digs in.

We lived on a 38 foot steel, long keel ketch for six and a half years. We wanted steel because if you sail for long enough something will hit you or you will hit something. On that basis I wouldn't want a different yacht also she is very sea kndly. We got hit twice, the first time would have sunk a GRP boat.

Thanks all - surprising so far is the size of the boats, I assumed they would be bigger sort of averaging out at 45ft or so. Also surprised at the number of solo sailors.

Personally I can't do without three hulls and shoal draft. The look of horror on other yachties faces as I enter their crowded anchorage and park on the mud is worth the complete refusal of marinas to have anything to do with me!!

Winter in Falmouth, summer on board Rampage.

We've been living on board for just over 2 years now. Rampage is a Bavaria 38, 3 cabin layout. One aft cabin is now given over to storage: you just accumulate so much stuff!
What would we move to if we had the dosh? Something about the same size but centre cockpit with a 'proper' bed in the aft cabin. Frankly, anything bigger just adds to costs without dramatically increasing anything else.
