What tablet to replace my defunct Hudl

The answer is very simple. You buy an iPad. It's simply the best in class.

If you're thick, or poverty stricken, you buy something else.... :encouragement:

Wondered when the first Apple-acolyte would add this.

Just what iPad do you get that has the performance of the HUDL2 or the Lenovo's referred to for near £100.
NB. My work bought me an iPad, I bought my wife a HUDL2 - both great devices, do virtually the same thing, the iPad is about 5 times the price.

I believe Tesco have made some quite significant changes and dropping the Hudl is one of them.
I don't doubt ipad is god quality product. But when I looked a year ago it was necessary to buy the much more expensive version to get built in GPS that works without a phone signal/internet connection. A function that is more than a little useful on a boat.
So I bought a much less expensive tablet (not a Hudl) which I keep on the boat . It is there as an alternative in case the fixed plotter fails but also functions as a remote desktop to the fixed Raymarine e7 via bluetooth . It seems to work perfectly well for a relatively modest outlay . I cant see an ipad being any better. I will not be too disappointed if it needs to be replaced after a couple of years . Technology of this sort seems to be outdated very quickly.
I bought the tablet from London Chartplotters as they test the products they sell so you can be sure you will not buy a product only to find it incapable of use as a navigation tool.

My Google Nexus 7 2013 is great. My wife has a Hudl1 and the charging port is loose. Easy repair though. As a principle I avoid Apple. IMHO overpriced and inflexible. Android bits like leads can be picked up on ebay cheap whereas all Apple stuff is unique to Apple. Anyway, as a previous post says all your Google and Amdroid apps will transfer to a new Android tablet.

I use my Android tablet on the boat so wanted a waterproof one which narrows down the field a great deal.

I also wanted a screen a bit larger that the Hudl / 2 so I can see my Navionics charts clearly.

I'm delighted with my choice but it depends upon what is important to you.

Just snared a Google Nexus 7 1st gen on fleabay for £40.plus £11.70 postage.
missing is the charger and cable.I am hoping anything with a usb outlet producing 2.1Amps will charge it?
I just like to keep updated with both Apple and Android and some Android apps are better like wi-fi sniffers etc.
The other item on sellers list is a dock.I hope this does not mean the USB socket is knackered!
More anon!

Writing this on board using my Lenovo 8in. It replaced my Samsung 7in tab due to battery failure. The difference in screen viewing is unbelievable.
I gave up the laptop and use Navionics charts for handiness. Does everything I need plus has access to the Glastnos GPS system tho I've not figured that out yet. No sim on this module but works fine teathered to the phone. IPads seem overpriced and restrictive but have their fans.

You can get a replacement socket on a pcb for a few quid.

I don't think the Amazon tablets will run android apps such as Navionics. They're targetted towards their own products. Good in many other ways but not good for navigation software at all.

I had a Google Nexus 7" which was brilliant from the word go.I donated it to a daughter when I got an iPad.I miss the flexibility of the Android system, and there were good Wi-Fi sniffer programs available for Android, as well as JeppersonPlan to Nav nav programs.A caveat here, the money you hand over for Jepperson charts is no good if you change to Apple, tough, you have to buy again!

not quite true - the jeppesen charts are cross transferable on both platforms

We've been looking for an inexpensive tablet for my daughter and judging by most of the reviews the LG G Pad 7 comes close to the top when taking everything into consideration. Price/memory/clarity/functionality/feel/expansion.... £80.
It's not the best at anything but good a most where as some of the other budget pads have one 'outstanding' feature and mediocre the rest.

I've got the kindle fire 7" - it can easily be hacked to allow sideloading of the google play store, while keeping the amazon stuff. It will run Navionics, but it doesn't have a built in gps..
