Sealine S24 UV joint out drive Rubber bellows

Well I've had the boat 16 months and this happened to one of my engines impeller. As it's my first boat, using your logic - statistics of one person - I and everyone needs to change impeller every 16 months
It's possible you might have picked up a plastic bag or similar to cause that.
Were the temperatures normal?

Exactly what I was thinking, or the impeller was on its last legs when the boat was purchased. Nevertheless, it is a critical component that needs inspecting every 50 engine hrs/season and replacing at least every two seasons regardless. More so if one were to accidentally ground the boat on a coarse substrate.

Engines were serviced before purchase, inspected by VolvoPaul as part of the pre purchase surveys. I was just responding to the OP suggesting never replacing parts like bellows or impeller as they never fail. Which obviously isn't true. Especially as I m on the Thames and not giving any parts a strenuous workout
The good news was despite being mechanically inept I replaced the impeller and it worked.

Gotcha👍

Haines 400 arrives on the moorings, new owner assured that impellers on the Yanmar engines were changed the previous season as part of normal servicing.:ROFLMAO:
First proper cruise out but no whizzing, skipper notes that temps are little high on one engine and asks for comments.
First question is of course what about impellers ? Answer been .....done .
Proposal to strip down and clean raw water heat exchangers but maybe try flushing with some expensive magic flushing fluid first.
Fluid and recirculating system collected and on boat ready to go.
Just before commencing the job somebody suggests that surely a quick look at the impeller might save a lot of work.
Sure enough several of the blades were missing.

After just over 5 years I had the out drive bellows replaced on my Sealine S24 (Volvo Penta say you should replace every 2 years). I was skeptical about the need to replace them but replace I did. I asked the mechanic guy who spends most his time doing stern drives to keep the old bellows for me.

I had a good look at the 5 year old bellows today and as I suspected they were as good as the day they were put on.

Don’t waste your money and the earths resources doing this stuff every 2 years. The sky will not fall in despite what others will tell you
I thinks thats blatantly very poor advice - bellows rubber hardens over time and can also crack due to be stresses caused by lifting and dropping the leg, there are so many contribuiting factors in bellows wear such as Ozone exposure, cycling of the leg lifting mechanism ambiant temps etc. its impossible to say every body can relax and just do it every 5 years or maybe every 10????? . and the OP cannot tell if the used bellows is good for another round or not just by looking at it. .. its what I would call false economy...

Considering OP is asking on another thread "switch on the throttle" suggests he has never raised the leg in all the years he has owned that boat. The bellows would have never been "exercised", hence, perhaps why his are in good condition, and in fresh water.
