What size of rope?

I call it a rope as its not a sheet or a halyard.
I've just bought a snuffer for an assymetric chute on our 38' yacht, 750 sq ft of it I think. Anyway, what diameter of rope should I use for the snuffer, if I need to haul it up and down then presumable 10mm but if its simple to lower even in a blow should I use maybe 8mm? And how big a loop do I need at deck level; enough to tie it off somehow I presume but is that all?

Yes I'm new to chutes.

8mm will be perfectly adequate, you'll need sufficient to tie it off securely so you don't lose it but not enough to get tangled around everyhing in sight! I usually make mine off with a fig 8 to a forward deck cleat to stop the line getting tangled on spreaders, radar reflector, radar etc. If you lower in the lee of the main then even in a blow its not a major effort getting it snuffed.

The chute is attached to the inside of the snuffer at the top. The snuffer itself is then attached to the existing halyard and pulled up. The bucket is hoisted and lowered via a continous loop of rope (in my case 8mm). Some people will have a length of rope twice the height of the mast plus some for tying off. However, it can advantageous to have the rope twice the length of the forestay plus some for tying off. The reason for this is so that the snuffer can be closed along the whole length of the chute. Without the extra length the tack prevents you from lowering the chute that extra bit.
