A good skipper = a person that forgets all the rubbish written in the Colregs, which over half the boat users these days have never seen, let alone read, and those that have read it, still don't have a clue what the hell it all means.
A good skipper = a person that can use their own common sense.
If you can keep your head
Whilst all around you are losing theirs
covers it pretty succinctly IMO.
Or as I told the children earlier this year, "When we are on the boat you do what you are told. That's your bit of the deal. My bit of the deal is to be right when I tell you to do something. Which do you think is the hardest bit?"
I reckon you can't be a good skipper unless you have checked the weather forecast in advance and considered (if cruising especially) the crew's feelings, especially if you know it might be a bit lairy. Have heard too many bedraggled, bashed up crew complaining about 'shouldn't have blummin well gone out in the first place' sails.
Never do that, go out in questionable weather, after all theres lots of more days to go sailing and only so much rioja 1997 left!! pass me the corkscrew!
