What is the law on stripping parts from an abandoned boat?

Cant be in Cornwall it would have been stripped within hours. Years ago when i was at Falmouth Tech college a big Scottish stern trawler got wrecked near Maenporth beach under the cliffs. She ended up laying on her side with decks nigh on vertical. Me & a bunch of mates went down to have a look & it was a scene out of the 18th century, That wreck was swarming with blokes & within a few days the ship was stripped bare, i mean stripped.
Considering the access problems it was impressive to see!
Same on the isle of Wight. To prove that you can look at the boat that ran ashore, skipper drunk, after leaving The Hut. That was a bare hul inside a week.

Just because it happens, it doesn't mean it's legal. Boats blowing off the moorings near Hardway tend to end up at Tipnor. In general, you've got about two hours before the pillaging starts. That property has an owner, and they could be found if necessary so, without their consent it's theft, pure and simple.

No. The person who owns the wreck knows about it and you have not been engaged to salvage. So it’s theft.

That’s how I see it, but I am not qualified to advise. Tell your friend that they need to ask someone who is qualified.
I agree. The boat is someone's property until disposed of ie sold or given away.

Go to the nearest Police Station and report that you have found it. After a time it might become YOUR property.

Then, when you have nicked what you want from it, it will be your problem to dispose of................

I didn’t say it was, though on this occasion you could argue it was poetic justice.
