Hi folks

Doing a 5 day DS course starting Sunday night - what do I need to take? no doubt a few of you have forgotten essential items or regretted taking some stuff before?

Cheers

HW Tilman said 'never take passage on a yacht without an onion'.
If you are joining a typical course boat with several others, a pair of earplugs will improve your sleeping very considerably.
Factor 20 suncream for nose and lips.

It's not only what you may forgot to take, but you should also remember to:
- never mess with the skipper's supply of whiskey,
- add nothing to your whiskey, but more whiskey,
- rent it if it floats, flys or fornicates, because it's cheaper.

Something as a food modifier, in case it is rubbish. Curry powder for instance or HP sauce. Even your fave flavour of Cup A Soup if you must.

Two face flannels (different colours)...one to wash where the food goes in and the other to wash the area where the food comes out! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Towel - sleeping bag - wooly hat - warm gloves - a bottle of wine might go down well - change of clothes in case you get wet - suncream - if you get chance read up on the times of HW and have a good look at a local chart so you have some idea of where you are.
Most important factor IMHO be kind to those who know less than you nad show them how to do things FOR THEMSELVES, don't do it for them, and have as much fun about what you do as is possible.
Offer to make tea whenever you can.
None of this will help you pass as such but the people around you will be pleased to be on a boat with you and that is much more important than knowing a bowline from a half hitch.
And do your DS with one school and your CS with another as variety of teaching is really useful.
Perhaps that post about fingernails is supposed to be suggesting you'll be sitting around scratchig yourself a lot, I'm not sure. He's probably woried you'll get a hang nail.

I have just got back from my DS and the two things I wish I had taken were antiseptic creme (for the minor injuries) and lipsil...
Oh, and to actually use the suntan lotion that I had taken!

When I did mine in 1990 we had a rather nice theatre nurse on board, so may I suggest something for the weekend sir? /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Would hate to get the colours wrong on your boat!!!!?? /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

seriously- take enough layers of clothing, if it gets warm you can take them off, but if you have left them at home then tough?? warm and waterproof gloves, decent warm beanie hat and a way of tying it on to your coat(i use a small piece of rope and crocodile clip), warm socks for your wellies. course books, for quick refresher, your favourite sea sickness remedy, your favourite sweets , and plenty of money for the nights out at the pub.

And before i forget!

HAVE A GREAT TIME ON THE COURSE...

Corcksrew, Wine, warm gloves. Whiskey, nice wine glass, nice whiskey glass.
think WC.
W- wine, whiskey, warm gloves.
C- corsckrew.
W- variation West add.
C- chart work add variation.
W- well, make sure it's not always Your round in the evening.
C- chart work, only measure distance from the sides not the top!
W- wake up next to the examiner only if She is a bird!
C- check out any birds in the Course
W- check out any anchors spelt with a W in the Course!
C- check out early on the last Morning, having stuck a large bar bill on somebody elses Tab! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Good luck

Strangely I rented a five ton digger last week and it didn't fly, float or fornicate...

Perhaps if you gave us details of your test procedures, the esteemed members might be able to give you some pointers.....
