It does have the look of internally generated damage, one would think a gas explosion would have caused a lot more damage, perhaps exploding battery or something simmilar
 
My money would be on Lightning damage, especially with the marks around the seacocks and transducer. As for the damage at the front it may have something to do with the anchorchain lying piled up in the locker. Any other evidence of damage such as fried electrics/starter motor/alternator or radio?
 
Yes lightnings correct my wife took the pictures, as others have said happened in loch ness.
how do you stop this happening to yourself?

Its not an easy thing to prevent against, some measures can be taken but not simple; people have been trying in places like Florida for a long time, there is no easy & cheap solution.

The cracks around the skin fittings are very indicative of a lightening strike, if I ever thought my boat had taken a hit it would be straight out the water to check it.

We had a side strike on the last boat - electronics fried and the antenna in the cockpit!
But as we didn't bond any of the seacocks and had no hull anode we had no structual problems....
