Decided to change the oil on my Hurth gearbox.Drained oil off, refilled, ran engine to fill cooler.Needed a top up,decided to top up thro. dipstick hole as easier than thro. filter hole as it means removing filter.Found my funnel, which has about 4 inches of plastic pipe on,topped up to correct level, removed funnel and it must have caught on threads as I withdrew it and the bit of plastic pipe fell into g/box!! Envisaged having to strip down g/box.Drained oil off soldered a small bulb onto a couple of bits of wire.Lowered bulb into g/box thro dipstick hole.Proggled around and eventually managed to get pipe vertical.Lowered another piece of wire thro hole in plastic pipe and the end I had bent caught on the bottom of pipe and I pulled it out.2 hours later, Phew relief!! If anyone wants an op. with keyhole surgery,I,m your man.Seriously I was so lucky to have got it out.Later I put the plastic pipe back on the funnel and even if shoved on hard the taper on the funnel is that severe you only have to touch it for it to come off.

Speaking as an ex-owner of a 1965 Mini, then a Capri, TR7, Avenger ( please forgive me ) and various old motorbikes, I can safely say " I've had days like that ! "

I was going to say boat engines haven't been nearly so much trouble, then I remembered trying to fit the recoil spring on an Evinrude 4, and spinning out of control in a calm going through the Alderney Race while waiting for the araldite to set on a fractured core plug...

The sort of moments it's a lot better to remember with a wry grin from a cosy chair rather than experience at the time ! :)
