I asked William Heap the port Hydrographer Southampton about the colour change.
He answered thus..

"West Knoll became yellow at the request of Trinity House. When we moved it and added a light, it technically became a special mark, and these have to be yellow.

As it happens, it has also become much more visible, and more easily distinguishable from the nearby Green channel marks. the move was to better define the tail of the Bramble Bank."

So know we know.

No doubt coincidentally it also, together with Thorn Knoll starboard can, provides a very nice little transit to help you find Bramble post in the dark.

I suspect yachtmaster examiners have also pleaded for this so that candidates who are told to find the post have no excuses left! (South Bramble and Gurnard also form a transit, but I guess less visible).

Any better conspiracy theories?
