Is there a new pilot guide to the southern part of the west coast of scotland from say jura to Mull ? or what is the up to date edition of the Imray pilot to this area?

Imray have taken over the CCC Sailing directions:

the area you mentioned is the Kintyre to Ardnamurchan one.

Not quite, The Martin Lawrence sailing directions have been incorporated into the CCC Publication sailing directions with the new volumes being published by Imray. They now combine the best of both with the technical maps and pilotage from the CCC and narative from Martin Lawrence.

The best one at the moment is the Imray Mull and Surrounding Coasts for the area from East Jura to Mull and Tiree although the new combined CCC one covers round to Colonsay and Gigha.

Sawdoc, great to hear that you might be contemplating coming back this way again. It would be great to meet up somewhere again if you are coming by. Since perhaps you are only coming this way once I can lend you pilot books by CCC and Martin Lawrence if that saves you some beer tokens though the latest edition Kintyre to Ardnamurchan offered by Galadriel is a bargain at £15.

I could spare an Imray or Admiralty chart folio for a while too if you need it.
Hamish Haswell Smith too, great read when deciding where to go though I would not describe it as a pilot book, he does identify anchorages but does not describe all the hazards approaching from a distance.

How refreshing to come back to this thread after a few tough days at work to see great generosity and good spirit! What sailing and cruising is really about in my opinion.
I reckon if I make an investment in the sailing directions at this point, leaving it open around the house with nice pics of Scotlands gorgeous west coast scenery, I might just have a crew together by New Years!

Hi Quandary
Early days yet but I will definitely keep you posted if we manage to put this together. I have sent Galadriel a PM so hopefully that first step works out and we can start drafting up some passage plans. No doubt next post will be something along the lines of recommended harbours from Port Ellen northwards!

Also handy for quick reference is the Welcome Anchorages guide, available as a pdf download.

I tend to use Hamish Haswell Smith a lot when cruising- I wish there was an equivalent guide to cover the mainland side of things though.

Keep away from Martin Lawrence - you'll never go near anywhere for fear of disaster!

If you think Martin is scary, you should steer well clear of the older CCC Sailing Directions in the hard blue cover! The general opinion of those I sailed with was that they were written for people sailing around in boats with 15 feet draught. And I thought that right up until I took a shortcut between the norh and south anchorages in Arinagour and seriously damaged a rock.
