West coast scotland pilot guide Recommendations

Keep away from Martin Lawrence - you'll never go near anywhere for fear of disaster!

Too true, I can still see the image of the wrath of Dorus Mor, I remember getting the jitters when we were to pass it the first time, and still being cautious the next time when in reality both times it was like a trip across Portsmouth Harbour :)

And I'm sure Loch Scavaig can be as bad as the books say, but we found it enchanting

If you think Martin is scary, you should steer well clear of the older CCC Sailing Directions in the hard blue cover! The general opinion of those I sailed with was that they were written for people sailing around in boats with 15 feet draught. And I thought that right up until I took a shortcut between the norh and south anchorages in Arinagour and seriously damaged a rock.

Bet you didn't have the VHF on...;-)

The old CCC directions were written for sailing yachts in the days when many did not have or did not use engines. You sometimes need a lot more room then.

Ah well....
Sometimes it is the other way round these days. :) however

Try Cuan or Kyle Rhea ahint the tide ? nae fun at aaaa!.

I don't mind if the west coast sounds scary or not.. it still requires respect..here & there, so those without NP 218 and NP 222...stay away :D

and there are plenty of un- marked rocks about...

Almost all the Nav-marks are for commercial shipping , of which there is not a lot, so out-with those specific marks, the pre 1900 survey - flanged-up to WGS 84 may have to do?
Mark 1 eye ball still has some value..:)

SAWDOC
are you planing leaving these fair shores? Don't you like the rain?
With the Midshipman liable to be working 27/7 next year, JSK tied up to the wall on Harbour Master duties, me in France, and the Folkboat away cruising the islands, Galway bay will be empty save for a bit of racing on Wednesdays.
Send us a postcard.
