"The Coastguard was 'knocked out' by the sasser virus and had to rely on 'pen and paper logging of traffic...", so read a local news-bite of the latest gremlin to negate technological aids relating to boating. I think this should serve as a warning both to seasoned navigators relying too much on new technology and to those new to the activity who possibly do not know of 'pre-computer' navigational techniques. Irrespective of the 'hardware' on board, there should always be a pen and paper trace of navigational routes....

Any ‘Mission Critical’ servers / networks shouldn’t be on the Internet.
If they are you get what you get!

What about internet servers doing a £million turnover a day? Shouldn't be on the internet? If they weren't on the internet, they wouldn't be able to take the orders? Are they not 'mission critical'?

What about the ones doing huge multiples of that a day? surely mission critical. again, if not on the internet, wouldn't be able to business.

I sell systems that do this, so numbers not made up, but cannot name names here for obvious reasons

Abslutely agree. One of my first instructors had a motto; "there should never be only one of anything" - well except me of course /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Fair point but I would put business retail type applications into a different category, by their nature they need to be on the net. Maybe ‘mission critical’ is the wrong term. The point is that if a system doesn’t need to access the net, why let it anywhere near it.

sorry old chap you are wrong, the latest windows server 2003 SBS is designed so that it can be accessed by the "road warriors" so that they can do "mission critical" things while they are away from the office and guess how they access it? over the net

Yes but the internet isn't the only way to gain remote access, VPN’s, dial up and dial back lines are still a viable solution.
You (and Bill) say “the latest windows server 2003 SBS is designed so that it can be accessed by the "road warriors"” he also said it was more secure. People believe it, and look what happens - a patch or four, a SR, a few more patches, a SR etc until the latest new more secure offering is presented to the market.

Agree with you absolutely in navigational terms. In terms of keeping mission-critical servers safe there's a simpler answer - run Linux not anything with a Gates label

Linux is only safe in in that it's not the largest used OS. If everyone went Linux, then the virus writers would change to suit. and don't think because it's open source, it's less prone to security problems than MS
