I work for a shipping company and the crews of our commercial ships regularly refer to yotties as WAFI's

If the cap fits wear it....and I have seen some fully paid up members of the WAFI club

I was told it originated from RNLI, also they have MAFI- for the motor powered fraternity

Not at all..he asked a question and i answered...I live on a boat and have done for several years....but i'm not a commercial sailor

Recreational seafarers who proceed oblivious to the Int. Collision Regs. re Responsibilty Between Vessels, VTS, TSS, etc are collectively known, by professional mariners, as WAFI's and PAFI's. They are......
WIND-Assisted F***IN Idiots POWER-Assisted F***IN Idiots and they can be found on all coastal and estaurial waters of Europe in the middle or WRONG side of the DEEP-WATER CHANNEL during THE SILLY SEASON, ie May to September.
Many respond alarmingly to 5 short and rapid blasts from a 30,000 Tonnes Ferry 2 cables astern of them. They are ABOLUTELY FLABBERGASTED that THOSE FERRY CHAPPIES don't know that POWER GIVES WAY TO SAIL and THE EASIEST WAY TO TRANSIT THE THAMES IS TO CUT THE CORNERS.
