Volvo Tamd41p Oil 90PSI????

I believe these is a relief valve set to 60 or so psi that basically sets the oil pressure. There is another relief valve in the engine set to 90 or 95, I saw reference to this once in a manual somewhere. It seems it is a safety valve to stop pressure getting too high and oil being forced past seals. The normal oil pressure 60-70 can be adjusted by the externally accessible valves by shimming the spring.

Hi, im looking at buying a boat with this engine.

runs fine, but the oil psi is 90 at WOT. they've checked gauge, sender, filter, relief spring etc.

30 at low rpm.

Also the engine WOT is 4100-4200rpm.

Again, runs fine at that, but ive read conflicting reports it should be 38-3900rpm.

The volvo manual says max wot psi is 92.5psi..... As its not been maintained to a good standard in my opinion, im going to strip and clean all auxiliaries. and go through everything.

But i dont want to be stuck with a engine out job to rectify a possible high oil psi.

any info if all sounds ok?
I checked my oil pressure today. Hot engine, 3600 under load, about 70psi. Difficult to get an accurate reading as the VP gauge has no graduations between 60 and 90 psi . Pressure at idle was 30psi.

Can I ask if you have ever completed this as shimming in my opinion would actually increase the pressure further as it increases tension on the spring ? There is no reference to any shims being required in the exploded diagram from Volvo

Oil pressure comes from resistance to flow, all a pump does is produce the flow. The faster the pump turns the more the flow against the fixed resistance. At some point the pressure is limited by a valve which opens (normally spring loaded) and returns some oil to the sump. If the pressure becomes too high the resistance must have increased, partial blockage somewhere. Oil filter is favourite for this. Could be a bit of crud somewhere. Could be the relief valve sticking. Could also be oil with too high a viscosity but that won't happen to oil, wrong new stuff is problem here.

I made a note about this and checked mine whilst out at the weekend - was also circa 70psi or so when up around 3000-3400rpm and drops down to 30 at idle.
