My recollection is as the reduction ratio is in the lower gear unit final output and designates the final letter? In which case the answer is yes

It is the upper unit that is different as well as the reduction ratio which is I think in the gearbox rather than the lower unit. The upper unit casing is also different with a different mounting.

The gear ration on both upper units is the same, It looks like the mounting can be swapped from one to the other. My main concerns are with the attachment to the lower unit and to the engine.

Tranona might know - I thought Volvo supplied some sort of conversion unit for their sail drives....?

The E is either 2.2;1 or 2.5:1 The B/C/D is either 1.66:1 or 2.15:1 according to Volvo's identification chart. AFAIK the diaphragm and the lower leg attachment is common.

ITYWF the 120S-E was fitted to more powerful engines (eg MD22 series)
I seemed to remember reading that the gears have a special finish ..... I thought the information came from Tranona ?
(It uses an API GL-5 SAE 75W–90 gear oil whereas the others use engine oil)

There was some discussion , many years ago , about replacing the leg of a 120S-E with one of the other variants. AFAIR there was no problem doing that.)
