I am thinking of doing an oil change / service myself can anyone tell me of potential pitfalls, things to do etc. i.e. getting the old oil out.

Re. oilchange, you need to get the oil HOT/working temp. in order to pump it out. The Pela Oil Pump has got a good reputation in these parts.
