volvo ips problems

Sorry to resurrect this again but when one reads these posts it would appear that all Volvo IPS systems are doomed to some sort of failure with either problems with diagnosis and/or expensive repairs. Does anyone know of anyone that has had only minor problems? The reason I ma asking is that there is a Rodman 41 for sale 2008 with twin IPS 500's. This is really putting me off which is a shame as the boat seems ideal for our needs.

Unfortunately you will always hear the bad stories and often plenty of comments from people who don't know so just repeat what others have said. Best to get checked out by one of the VP dealers/centres who work on then regularly and know them inside out, that would give me more pease of mind. Also take note of what those that have owned them say, if they were that bad there wouldn't be so many boats out there in use with them fitted.

Thank you. I have just been PM'd by an owner, who shall remain nameless, and he loves them. I have also spoken to an engineer who says that if I get him the engine numbers he can check to see if there are any warranty claims. I know this is not fool proof but what in life is?

Cheers.

My daughter has run a boat with the larger ones for 1200 hours over 3 years. Had initial problems with controls malfunctioning but soon sorted probably installation problems. Has run faultlessly since. Had the clean out of coolers annually as boat is in a warm climate. Now on third set of props due to shallow water use but has not had a pod snap off (yet)

Ive had 2 IPS 600 powered boats, one new and the other 8 years old.
The new one needed a new joystick on the flybridge, replaced under warranty.
The 8 year old one, I had no issues during my short period of ownership.
There no black art involved with general annual maintenance, just oils, filters and anodes etc.
If I had another one out of warranty, I wouldn't be using main dealer for maintenance, only if something went proper wrong.
Think of IPS as an more advanced, tougher version of the good old outdrive ;).

If it’s the one in France I’ve had a client on about it . The boat was flooded once so he left it

i am imagining "flooded" as its been full of water , partially sunk , sunk etc etc. Not something I would even consider as issues can show up a long time after a boat has been flooded and "fully repaired". The combination of a boat with Volvo IPS and one thats been flooded would make me run to the hills !

I wish you wouldn't sit on the fence and say what you mean :-) Point taken. I will ask the relevant questions when I get a call back from broker.

It's a shame the market is so quiet otherwise you could sell me a boat.

right heres the two scenarios , the broker comes back to you and says

1) Yes , it had a small flood a few years ago but thats all been sorted and there hasnt been any issues with it since.

2) Yes , the boat was partially sunk and had a full refit with stripped and rebuilt engines , IPS drives the lot. A full and complete refit which was carried out by a reputable firm.

If 1) then how much of that do you believe and why didnt they tell you about its history initially.

If 2) - IT WONT BE 2) !

Ok so being a bit of a detective I have heard from a Surveyor in France who shall remain nameless. It has been flooded and all electrics replaced. Rumour has it, that there is some kind of law suit in progress. As suggested I will walk away but would still like to find out more.

At this rate I'll never find a boat. Perhaps I would have more luck with a canoe. Still, dum spiro spero

Oh yes. I feel a little guilty as when I first started looking I saw several boats with higher values with Toby at JD. He has been very patient, or at least on the surface. Unfortunately, due to a pants mortgage broker missing a key change in lenders criteria meant we could raise much less than he originally stated. I will keep looking.

Will be electrical issue. Even if Volvo plug into the ECU, the engine won't always throw up the correct fault code. Could be a faulty switch causing the Engine to go into limp.
