This is a concern. there was a Volvo engined with problems about 3 - 4 days ago, now this one.

Im about to order a boat with VP engines should I think twice

MAN MTU, I think are on the bosch system or it was developed with them, CAT and Cummins have there own systems as Cat have always had there own fuel systems so that no one can copy or repair systems. Volvo are no more culprits than anyone else, as someones already said until common rail is fully sorted theres no place for then in the marine industry, though we need to meet emission levels and the only way is common high pressure systems.

Was talking to someone from Total fuels today with a transport engineer from dhl/currys he said that after tesing there fleet on normal and bio, bio gives less mpg than straight fuel, so that means more fuel used and more co2 emitted, where are we going? bloody governments.

The other thing the total rep said that supermarket fuel is exactly the same as branded fuel as it comes from the same refinery out of the same tanks, the BP something super diesel thats loads more money is the same fuel as standard supermarket whatever diesel, so dont bother wasting your money again, and forget the bio stuff !.

Cat's can do the same, a friend has 700hp ( not sure of model ) engines and they were both shutting down to limp mode on random occasions. In that case the Cat engineers came out to sea with a laptop hooked upto both engines. They did manage to figure out the problem then.

Guy in our Marina new Rodman 38 on IPS, is having endless problems, the other day on autopilot then both engine slowed to 1500revs for no apparant reason other than electrical management gremlins it would appear.

Kind of true, but not completely. I used to work in the oil industry and did a few refinery visits, some on a lorry with the driver. It does all come from the same refinery, and the companied do have sharing agreements. If you buy Esso fuel in Essex it will have come from Shellhaven refinery, vice versa Shell fuel in Hampshire. What happens is that an additive is added at the lorry filling stage which is specific to each brand of fuel.

This info was supplied from the Total refinery at Colwick , near Nottingham, no mention of any blending process.
He said that when they are in the quefor loading theres all the various fuel companies in a line all filling up from the same tank.

One other thing he said was that the tankers are split into three, and one day they could be full of red, next day white, next day heating fuel, kerosene etc.
I asked how they cleaned them out to stop any contamination, he said they didnt, so asked about red mixing ith road white fuel, he said yes it does get mixed all the time and other fuels too vice versa!

this is so true
you can mix red with white diesel
the main difference is the Sulphur rate to my knowledge which on red is about 20% with the white this is - 10%
the color is more given as a tax control escuse to my knowledge nothing more....
as for the Bio I am surprised as I head from a MY using this season that figures well the same if not better with the BIO, the boat has 2 Caterpillar
would like to read a real technical review about this in detail to be sure
the ambiental advantage of BIO is that altough u r burning fuel at the same time your are producing green trees flowers which does help the enviroment be better

I was under the impression that if you are caught with a hint of red in your vehicle your are in deep [--word removed--] !!!!

Unless it's changed since I was in the industry (quite possible as it was 15 years ago), then the drivers wouldn't always know about the additives as it's pre blended en route to the pump - the contract fleets are usually tied to one chain of stations in each area. As to the tank cleaning, it's true that with the diesel/kero the quantities left are so small that it makes little difference once the tank is re-filled. The important ones are JET A1 which is basically a very highly refined kerosene, where obviously there is special care taken with storage and handling, and NEVER mixing Kero and Unleaded, even in tiny quantities - very bad news!!

See my posting about SPM and I also have limp home problems but on older TAMD75P EDC engines.

How do you recover from the limp home situation? Do you throttles neutral, re-engage drive, then throttles again?

FWIW Volvo also mentioned autopilot but my limp home mode has even happened when in a lock and on both engines!

We really need to get together all information to ensure proper answers and fixes. Mine have been going on for 4 years. Maybe I have been TOO patient.

Here's the picture: New Rodman IPS penta 500s The engine hours counters have stuck at about 40/50 hours. Well, they do count up as the passage progresses, but then revert to 40/50 hours. The port engine and s/b engines show as about 9 hours out of sync anyway!!
Volvo seem to be like rabbits in headlights. No answers. And we suffered a power-down too...no reason..no fault codes. It just did it..from 3400 revs to 1500 for no reason. Took a flier, and closed the whole system down, then re-started..all fine, except that the engine hours counters, which had been about 2 hours awry, were suddenly 9 hours out!
We get the impression that Volvo don't understand their own systems. Let's hope we are wrong!

That's about it in a nutshell, although when it comes to Shell's "V-Power", then that comes from their own refinery.

If there still in warranty then you either contact the boat manufacturer, " Hope its not a sealine" or your nearest volvo dealer though to be fair some dealers are more clued up than others as it depends on the staff they employ, more than a standards issue.

Why do you say "hope it's not a Sealine" specifically?

Take out all non Volvo external devices

I had a similar problem with D4's

Got Volvo down and 3 times they checked it out with the vodia tool. Loads of problems came up.

All red herrings!

It was the fuel senders. They were not volvo parts and were linked into the system. As soon as these were unplugged all was and has been fine.

It could very well be the AP or some other device.

Hi

I do not worry about limping ,happens so many time`s . My problem is .I am losing joystick control and steering ,an that happens when I need .......

boriss

Hi Boriss and welcome to the forum.

I dont have Volvo Penta engines so I cant help but there are loads of forum members that have VP engines and I am sure someone else will have had the same problem as you and managed to resolve it.

can you describe the problem in a bit more detail ?
This is an old thread, perhaps you would have greater chance of success by starting a new post of your own, that way more would read it.

regards
Pete

Can I ask a daft question on IPS? Does the system make rudders redundant? I suspect that they can, but probably don't. If they do, then I suspect that the AP connects directly to the engine's brain. All being well - then I can see that has potential greatness. Maybe it could even take your boat fronm the berth to the destination berth without touching the controls. Possible in theory, no reason why not if the software is good enough and the boats kitted out with all the latest hight tech gizmos and sensors. Hey you could make up a Playlist like you do in Windows Media Player (or CD player) and set it to random play. Then you could turn up on a Friday and let the boat decide where it wants to take you. Brilliant idea, I think I am on to something. Don't tell anyone. lol. BUT if it all goes horribly wrong ..... ohhhhh FFS !!!!! .....my boat's going anywhere where it wants and as fast as it wants! How do I stop it before...........crash! Too late. Has anyone got the number for Haven Know Johnston handy?

Give me low tech any day when it comes to controlling my boat! Give me high tech for eveything else though.

BP something super diesel thats loads more money is the same fuel as standard supermarket whatever diesel, so dont bother wasting your money again, and forget the bio stuff !.

BP Ultimate and Shell Optimax diesel both have a higher cetane rating (55) than normal diesel (51) sold on forecourts so it's a nonsense to say that they are the same as normal supermarket diesel. I have used both for some years and I have proved to my own satisfaction that both provide a small increase in both performance and mpg, at least in the cars I have owned. Whether the extra cost is worthwile is another question altogether. Do you really think that BP and Shell would be able to get away with advertising improved performance, mpg and emissions for these fuels if it wasn't provable?
