I've looked at a Four winns 238 Vista with Volvo 5.7 DP engine. In terms of fuel economy is it going to be much, if any, worse that a 5.0 DP (an alternative). I like the idea of having the extra power 'just in case' but don't really want to have to pay for that with worse economy.

I know that Volvos don't have that good a name on this forum but is there much to worry about a 1998 version of this engine?

My expierience has been...
Engine only uses the fuel needed to go as fast as you want (ie) 25 ft boat. 1 with 7.4ltr, 1 with 5.7ltr
At 30 knt both will do about same mpg because 5.7 will be working harder, 7.4 won't be breaking into a sweat.
BUT full thottle on both boats, 7.4 will use much more.
I remember, I changed from a single V8 5.8ltr 25 ft boat, to a twin 5.0 ltr 27ft at 30 knts,both did 2.5 mpg

Jon,

Have a look at http://www.boattest.com/test-results.asp?ID=261&lg_username=&from_gi=Yes and scroll down to the economy chart.

Not the same boat, it's the 234 but has the same 5.7 with DP leg config. It's only a little lighter, and so will give you a close approximation of economy and performance

I have a 238 vista with 5.0EFI DP, I get around 7-8gph at 25 knots cruising, however if there are 6 POB it could do with a little more power.

have a look at the Four Winns web site, they have an archive section where you can find the fuel consumption figures for each engine configuration.

If you have any probs or need some advice, drop me a private message.

Just a personal comment on volvo reliabilty.I think that the low output low stressed stuff is being lumped in with the later over developed ? engines where volvo attempted to squeeze 300 horses out of a block designed for 140 hp.While searching for my present boat, viewed many many early boats with old volvo 40A/B lumps in them with lots of hours on meters and still running fine. Previous boat had a 4.2 V6 installed, certainly had no problems during my ownership.
Reckon it is down to 90% maintaince vs 10% the name on the rocker box.

Oooh look its still not dark and its nearly 5pm

Jon,

Have a look on the four winns website. There is a section called brochure archive or fast facts I think. At the end of the section for each model there are fuel consumption figures for each engine option.

I hope this helps.

Why can't all boat manufacturers give out this sort of information?

Hull repair update...had a phone call today, one little piece to be fitted, and then it's all ready. Went and had a look before xmas, and engine out, leg off, and floor cut away, and lots of reinforcement being put in, and lots of gel coat taken off on outside. Have reglassed the floor in, and brand new carpet ;) and engine and everything else replaced. Sounds like a major job, so kudos for Regal for their lifetime hull warranty, must have cost them a fortune

Now got to find a weather window to give it a shakedown cruise from Northney Marina on Hayling Island back to Lymington. Haven't looked at weather forecast yet, but must warn Byron that if the weather is good, his party might take a miss (I'm sure he'll understand...I haven't been on the damn thing since June!!!!!!)

Weather for this week and weekend is not for brass monkies as a cold front comes down from the North. Pleased to hear that everything is looking good and as you say a tribute to Regal. It's good to know that this kind of service still exists.

If you want a suicide jockey for the shakedown just give me a call. Just make sure that it is fully cured because I am not convinced they can mend it well enough for your requirements.

Re:Suicide Jockey!

Hee! I may take you up on that

Don't worry about the curing, had a minor mod done, and helm and passenger seat are now welded to the engine. Once at speed, the hull is irrelevant, only need the prop in the water.

Not sure how to slow down and berth without a hull though....maybe if I ask nicely, Haven will install a temporary ramp so we can do a James Bond and jump the wall into the yard. That yellow round the UK record breaking RIB is positioned quite nicely, and would make a good bouncy castle, so could land on that?

Still want to come? /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Mr Bailey, no problems whatsoever with the 5.7L volvo. It does make me smile when people criticise volvo motors, all the v6 & v8 engines are GM, identical to Mercruisers, Petrol Yamahas and the like, they are no better and no worse. The 5.7L will use more fuel than the 5.0L, but only when you use the additional power available, infact, at cruising speeds it will probably use less.
