Does anyone know which model Perkins engine my Volvo 2040 is based on? I seem to remember seeing a Perkins sticker/plate somewhere on the block. I need a head gasket and inlet/exaust manifold gaskets and I suspect that the Perkins ones just might be cheaper than Volvo Marine!

If it makes any difference the engine was fitted in 1996/7.

Very good chance it could be a phaser engine , does it have an ally head,OHC,timing belt and does the cam cover act as a cam bearing all this info + wether it is turbo or not will give the info i need to send you a Payen head set .ps if it is alloy the head will need refacing

Not sure of head material - havn't got it off yet. (I stalled when I realised I had borrowed a 22mm long reach socket to get at the injectors last time I worked on them)

The engine has not got a turbo charger and has conventional pushrods and rockers - not an overhead cam.

I did note that the rocker shaft is "built into the head" - not on pillars as many are.

I too would be interested if the perkins engine is the same as the 2040. We also put a new head gasket on our about 2 years ago we were getting oil in the water. the gasket from memory was about 70ish pounds from VP. The job took us about two days we also had the head x-rayed (spent more time paintng the engine green on assembly).

We are in the relms of doing the saildrive seal at the mo.

I think it's based on the Perkins Industrial range of small diesel engines - originally produced for Perkins by a company in Japan, but now I understand, built in Peterborough. It's a straight forward overhead valve engine. Don't bank on the Perkins being cheaper than Volvo Penta - I have the Perkins Peram M20(equivalent to the VP 2020) and when I wanted a new exhaust elbow, the VP was cheaper than the Perkins by about £50, but I did have to sleeve it from Ø45 to Ø2" to suit my exhaust hose - which Volspec did on the spot.
Try VOLSPEC at Tollesbury for info & spares - they are both Perkins & VP distributors and very helpful with advice. Tel No 01621 869756

Thanks for all your thoughts.

Head now off and its obvious that the previous owner had somehow got water into the engine through the exaust. No's 2 and 3 pistons are badly corroded on the crown. No sign of bore damage, but I can imagine what the rings are like.

Took head to engineers and found the exaust valves also leaking badly. - Corroded and at least two past being recut and need replacing. The engineering shop sucked their teeth and said pistons were about £300 each and the valves were about £63 each available from Volvo only.

I was resigned to looking at a new engine, but phoned for prices.

Two pistons, complete gasket set and a set of valves for just over £500. (The valves are £7.63 each NOT £63!) New engine £4700 plus VAT. Is this what the Americans call a "No Brainer"?
