VMG doesnt make sense...

VMG is Velocity Made Good towards the wind... It is purely relative to the wind and as shown on the polar...

It is not therefore VMG to the next waypoint / mark or finish line.

Don't sail above somewhere around 140 degrees if going down wind and below around 40 degrees if going upwind. You are better to tack upwind or gybe downwind this will be quicker than sailing the direct route. That is the point of VMG. Hope that explains it simply enough.
