Visionary heritage guardians or officious prats?

Well if it were like the old Oak trees in gardens either side of my place, they would have magically disappeared before anyone had a chance to object.

Any architect/planner/developer would have known the status of the buildings and proceeded accordingly. They've had plenty of time to sort this out but the urgency has probably engineered. Perhaps they thought the word "Olympics" would be the magic wrecking ball.

I see no reason why listed buildings should be demolished.

Yes, was there a couple of weeks ago. No excuse for not submitting a plan that preserves the buildings. Hopefully they will get the message and work with the council for an acceptable solution. Many bad decisions are made in haste and regretted for ever.

Hmmm .. have any of you actually seen the industrial wasteland that contains these listed building?

[/ QUOTE ]

Yes and a sympathetic and imaginative re-development of the sites, could be beneficial to many local businesses and the people that live in the surrounding area.

Having spent a bit of of time in the area, my view is that any development would be better than what is currently there!

Perhaps in this country we'd be better looking forward rather than looking back?

I agree with you that it needs sorting, but not to the disadvantage of historically valuable buildings and infrastructure, looking forward is fine, but we need to remember who we were, and where we come from. all IMHO of course. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I don't quite understand the nature of the listing. I thought that if a building was listed the question of demolition was one for English Heritage and that councils worked to their guidelines to ensure the rules were observed.

I am not in a position to have a personal view on the value of these buildings but having been responsible for listed buildings in the past I do sometimes wonder if there is too much listing to the disadvantage of the social and economic life of the country. On the other hand as Joni Mitchell sang "don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone". And like others I feel that any architect or developer worth their salt would have come up with an acceptable plan.

Last point. Why is it that some people seem to think that if they don't lie they should be rewarded. [ QUOTE ]
The application submitted was for the work we wanted to do, we were quite straight forward with the Council about that.

Probably because they get rewarded if they do lie! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Are you sure the council didn't block it to stop Johnny Foreigner coming over here, getting in too much practice and winning medals??? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Maybe they aren't that daft after all!

[/ QUOTE ]I don't know anything about the buildings or the area myself but I'm prepared to rely on the status of the buildings as presumably agreed between English Heritage and the Council. I think if any on this forum had wandered round the wastelands of Liverpool Docks and similar areas 20 plus years ago they might have formed the view that it was a dump only fit to be knocked down. Look at Albert Dock and the Liverpool seafront now.

I think it's totally inexcusable that the developers and other interested parties haven't sensibly tackled this issues well before now and have left it so late. This is presumably to give more and improper leverage to get their own way. The Council for its part should have been been pressing for some planning briefs long ago.
