Virtual phone numbers

We have a London number with Skype. As long as we're online and signed in it can be used. Also handy for people to call and leave messages without having to log in to skype

Skype will rent you a number, which can be in whichever country you find convenient. I think you can rent multiple numbers, if it suits you to have a number in the country you're currently in and also one in your home country. It isn't expensive, but allows people to ring your Skype account from a normal telephone, at the charge they would pay for phoning that number on a normal connection.

Skype is easily the cheapest and easiest way of keeping in touch with friends and family internationally. However, it does rely on a decent internet connection, and some mobile operators block it on their data services.

If you are on O2 you can use Tu Go providing you have a WiFi connection for anywhere in the world for the cost of the UK call against your price plan. OK Tu Go still has some more work to do on the software (Android and iOS) but I've used it in the Channel Islands and France this year. Works for voice and text.
