hi
what's the correct way to hail a marina or another boat?

at the moment I hail a marina/another boat by calling their name twice over followed by my boat name twice over.

confused I just googled correct vhf usage and another site said you hail by saying the boat/marinas name three times over followed by your boat name once.

what's the correct etiquette? think my vhf course is overdue.

Agreed. A good way to prevent the risk of a large fine too ;)

When calling up a Harbour or Marina I generally use 2 of each like others, then 1x for following messages. But I have heard 3x, 2x and 1x i various combos. On my VHF course about 4 years past, I think it was 3x both for the initial contact then 1x for following messages and never say "over and out" :D

Can't see the point in obsessing over number of times each name is said. It depends on the circumstances. If I'm calling another random person out of the blue, I'll give him his name three times, slowly, to give him a chance to notice it, and not pass any message in the first contact:

Hello Rubber Duck, Rubber Duck, Rubber Duck,
This is Kindred Spirit, Kindred Spirit,
Over

If I'm calling a busy marina who I've just heard deal with a couple of other boats, he's obviously on the ball and just wants the meat of the message. We're probably close, so conditions are good and not much danger of mishearing:

Hello Nowhere Marina, this is Kindred Spirit.
Do you have a berth for one night for a 24-footer drawing 3 feet please, over

(The opening "Hello", incidentally, is what I was taught on a military Signals course. It's filler that covers the time taken for transmit circuits (and ears!) to open. The former is probably a hangover from ancient radios, the latter is still relevant :) )

Once we've made contact and are exchanging messages, then assuming conditions are good and there's no other traffic to confuse matters, I drop callsigns as unnecessary until the final signoff. That too is part of military Voice Procedure as I was taught it; not sure of the Ofcom rules.

Few things are as annoying as the guy saying his own (long!) name three times, followed by the other party's name three times, either side of every single sentence, so that you have twice as much header as content.

That's the correct way
However 2x2 is ok for ship to ship and ship to marina
Nobody will SHOUT at you for using that method!

Portsmouth QHM will.

They want something like "QHM, this is Kwakas, requesting permission to cross to Gunwharf, over".

Efficient, but not exactly standard.

" Kwakas this QHM ,Over
"QHM this is Kwakas, permission to cross to Gunwharf, you to$$ers Over"

See that tower on the RHS as you come into the harbour?
It's where they keep leisure boaters that give 'em grief over the VHF

Only sailing boats call each other on VHF in the Solent. Powerboat-marina and power boat-powerboat always use their phones, so they can nip in and get the berth.
BTW, it isnt necesarry to call the CG on your phone to test its working, either.
