Afraid I am a bit square when it comes to this sort of thing (but I would say that in public) - yes I have got the whole lot including a completed CG66. I was merely highlighting those never ending smaller costs that do add up to a significant amount at the end of the year. I really wouldn't say it was worth it inland but a must if you are coastal or offshore.

Incidentally Mike......

If I may make so bold I think the way they've b*gg*r*d about with your job title is a really classic case of 'if it aint broke, dont fix it'.......

From......Manager,Aeronautical & Maritime Services Section,Radiocommunications Agency to........

No fixed JOB Title, something or other in Ofcom .....and now......

Team Executive,Maritime & Aeronautical Team, Ofcom ....

Come to think of it, I like the middle one best /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Maybe or maybe not worthwhile when inland, but On Loch Lomond there is a rescue boat that moniters the radio, so as far as i'm concerned anything to do with safety is worth the £££££££.
Plus when using Ship to Ship, its a dam site cheaper than mobile phones/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif/forums/images/icons/wink.gif.

Well.........it would be interesting to know how many folks hereabouts knew that.....

I accept that anyone with a radar is also likely to have VHF and therefore a SRL, but I wonder how many of us were aware that we need a SRL if we have radar but no vhf.....or perhaps only a portable?

An Operators Certificate is a licence requirement, so if we come across you using a radio without it, you have invalidated the Ship Radio Licence and therefore rendered yourself liable to prosecution. In other words you can be treated the same as if you don't have a licence.

The Communications Act that made us part of Ofcom changed the way that we prosecute. The possibility of taking the case to Crown Court for simple unlicensed use has now gone, along with the unlimited fine and/or 12 mths in prison. At present a prosecuion would take place through the Magistrates Court leaving a maximum fine of £5,000 and/or 6 mths custodial sentence.

The Act also made provision for on-the-spot penalties, this is something that Ofcom is actively discussing with the DTI in order to set the penalty levels before implementing.

Thats nothing, I have gone from a telecommunications officer to, wait for it

'pay band 3'

makes me feel all warm inside that does!

So if you want to know what I do or specialise in, I am a pay band 3, that clears it up nicely, dunnit!
