Before I start let it be known that I have no experience with vhf so if this is a truly bonkers statement dont blame me.
A boating friend told me that you can transmit on chanel 6 without the need for a licence cos its a spare channel. Is this correct cos I am not convinced.

CH 6 is bridge to bridge but is usually used by locals for keeping in touch. You do need VHF cert and licence to use

One day course. Fee about £80, plus "certification fee" (?£30-ish?). Short exam at the end of the day, which has seldom been failed by anyone, I believe. Often offered rather more cheaply at evening classes by your friendly Local Education Authority (or whatever they're called now).

RYA website lists establishments offering the course, I think.

Going on a RYA VHF Operators course (£££££££££), passing the exam and gaining a user certificate. You then need to apply for a ship's radio licence (££££££££) in order to use it. Ships licence has to be renewed every year (££££££££££££).

Dead easy, You need an operators license, easily done on a 1 day coarse. and then you also need a licence for the set either fixed or Handheld which you can apply for online, and i think the handheld license cost about £20 a year, Its a handheld i use..
Both easy and cheap to get and well worth it in my opinion, I like you, are land locked, but i still get plenty of opportunity too use it.

Been asked twice for radio licence but never for operators.
