Having got fed up with windvanes self destructing I bought a Vetus solid state one last season. It has no moving parts to the masthead unit that seems to be a sensor that works on the relative temperature of the wind blowing on it or some such other clever electric-ery that I don't understand. It has two analogue dials. One for speed (remarkably accurate it seems) and one for wind direction.
The latter in light winds goes ape every now and then and the dial rotates continuously (trying to pick up a signal I guess) but when the wind picks up to about force 3 it works pretty well but the dial points to the direction the wind is going to rather than where it is coming from which is confusing until you get used to it as close hauled to the wind it points to the stern quarters which is opposite to anything else I have ever used.
My question is "has anybody else got one of these strange and mysterious gismos"
Anyone got anything to say about their performance, reliability etc. I can't be the only one to have bought one (or am I!)
