I have a Volvo Penta AQ205 Petrol (GM 4.3litre V6) on a DuoProp leg on a Sealine 218.

It has raw cooling straight from the stainless steel inlet pipe on the leg, via a shaped rubber hose to the rubber impellor pump on the front of the engine crankshaft pulley.

I use the boat on the Broads mostly, and would like to fit a Vetus inlet strainer with a transparent lid, so I can see what's happening, and also filter out some weed, (I assume the intake grill on the 290 leg doesn't do much straining at all !)

I've searched the web high and low, but can find no reference to anyone fitting a remote strainer to a V6 on a duoprop leg.

It seems OK to me, but am I missing something ? Would it block up easier, or
not have sufficient flow ? The stainless inlet pipe from the leg is 28mm OD, and the inlet stub to the water pump is 32mm OD, so I was thinking of fitting a 1.25" Vetus strainer box, and using 1.25" pipe to the pump, and then adapting the 1.25" strainer inlet to the 1" stainless inlet pipe. (Keeping the pipes at 1.25" for as much as possible).

In the past, I've also fitted Y ball valves in my cooling intake lines, so that I can easily winterise the cooling circuit by having a short leg of hose into a plastic container filled with antifreeze.

Has anyone done this ? or can think of any reasons why it might not be a good idea ? :)
