At that stage the boat was something like 9 years old. They came on board and did the usual Customs stuff then asked me about VAT.
They were in the harbour, and they spotted a red ensign so came over to investigate.

This is unheard of to me also and I've also sailed Holland entering and leaving via the Noorzeekannal with neither the customs or the police wanting to speak to us. It's very doubtful the ensign was the main reason especially with the UK being EU members for many years.

They actually told me that was why they came over.

The Red Ensign Group has many non-EU members and the flags are similar.

Has there been any more info or opinion on this subject?
I might be looking at buying a boat later in the year, and it could all make a lot of difference.
I am aware it is still all conjecture, and is not likely to be decided until the last minute, but I was hoping there may have been some newer discussion, now that the transition cannot be extended

Regarding VAT paid in EU27 the talk of where the boat was located on 'B' day i.e. 31st Jan 2020, is that still likely to be valid, or will it be where the boat is located at the end of the transitional period i.e. 1st Jan 2021.
I'm guessing a reciprocal agreement regarding VAT paid status is probably not likely
