Hi
I'm just about ready for the water after a recent purchase, a 1998 - V8 whilst running on the hardstanding (hosepipe) there is a lot of black and very dark grey exhaust smoke, she has been standing for quite a while! any suggestions would be appreciated.

Old motor trade guidelines:

White smoke could be internal coolant leak (Head gasket?)

Blue smoke is Oil burning (Rings or Valve guides?)

Black Smoke is rich mixture or dirty fuel. (Choke stuck? Carb internal leak? Diesel added at some point?)

Thrash it for a while to see if it clears up? Service the carb, and check mixture.....

You really ought to give more detail as you are leaving us to guess what you have

Assumption 1/ It's not had a samuri type conversion and it's a petrol?

Assumption 2/ It's a Mercruiser?

Assumption 3/ It's 5.7 litre??

Assumption 4/ It's a Carb?

Assumption 5/ It's a 4bbl carb??

Ok so now it could be Holley / Rochester both are different to check / adjust, but it could also be efi, could be GM or Ford base engine?

Need to know more.

Thanks for the reply
Sorry for the obvious lack of info, its a 1998 V8 5.0 litre petrol with thunderbolt 5 ignition, i believe it's all standard, not sure to the exact carb as yet.

Check the cheap and easys first, lift the cockpit floor in case a lack of ventilation, then remove the air cleaner, and while thats off check the choke flaps are open.
