Reading advice in here and rapid degradation of the aluminium hub anodes has persuaded me to stop polishing my bronze folding prop. and instead to coat it with Velox. So a simple question - the advice seems to be to roughen the surface well, apply Hammerite special metals primer and coat with the Velox.
However Velox say it is imperative to use their pricy primer, nothing else will do; so, do I need to use both or is the special metal primer an effective substitute for the Velox one.
Response from those who have had success with Velox would be greatly appreciated.

I have applied it once, and so far not convinced as it has become coated with a hard crusty layer, but very little failure when last checked, which was almost a year ago now.

After removing every last vestige of anything with a cup brush on a grinder, I prepared with rough emery then a thorough rinse off with Acetone several times, followed by two coats Velox primer, then two coat Velox top coat.

But those advocating special metals primer seem to be happy to the adherence.

A few years ago when I tried another coating I used Special Metals primer. The AF failed in short order, but the SMP stuck like doo dah to a blanket, but the barnacles stuck the same way to the SMP !

I was wondering whether the secret answer is copper powder and very strong chilli powder mixed liberally into the SMP.

I painted my prop with Velox + the Velox primer and it was in the water for a year and a half and came out after pressure washing with just the primer still (mostly) adhered. It did a good job against Mr Barney Cules IMHO and I will use their system next time. It's as soft as s**** though so not the easiest to apply...

Taking account of the boat being in fresh water (uncoated it stays clean if polished,) my main focus is extending anode life, so perhaps the special metals primer overcoated with Trilux (which works well on the saildrive leg) would be a better combination?

I have used Hammerite special metals primer with Velox for a few seasons. Initially quite a few problems with the Velox chipping off (even with the Velox primer), but this year I tried 2 coats of primer and keyed it well before putting on the Velox (not too thick) and it seems to have performed well.
