Try looking at commercial vehicle breakers. The truck units are basically the same as the marine ones. You will need to change some of the fittings tho to bring it up to marine spec. If your boat doesn't run on diesel you could install a small tank just for the unit. I've fitted a unit from a bus into a boat, but to be honest it was a bit to high in the output stakes.
Acquiring a second hand unit from the truck should save you quiet a bundle of cash. The pipes and exhaust fittings will need changing for ones that will suit a boat and BSS if that applies to you. Most of them can be sourced quiet cheaply from various tubing and piping suppliers. The most difficult one will be the exhaust skin fitting. Probably have to have this made up. Good luck in your hunt!!
Yeah! I know its running rough, but your lucky its running at all!!
Most of the s/h Eberspacher heaters seen at boat jumbles have been sourced from old Telecom or British Gas vans. They seem to be identical to the marine version, and I know several people who have fitted them to their boats. Expect to pay around £150-200 for one, but you will need to buy some additional parts to complete the job.
If you E mail me I can let you have a couple of phone numbers of people selling them.
For my sins I have in my Boat House a retired Thames Water Patrol Launch fitted with what I can only describe as a Lorry type heater. Frankly I don't think it's man enough for the job and I only have a small cabin to heat as the bulk of the vessel is cockpit as Thames Users will know.
Yes Simon because they are run off the batteries, at least the one I have fitted is. However they do depend on the engine(s) being hot enough, just like a car heater.
This is a myth! Like dragons, unicorns and trustworthy government. The search for an eberspacher from a truck breakers has become my grail quest.. I will find one some day and all the secrets of the universe will be revealed to me...
I have been calling truck breakers all over the country trying to get a used heater for 6 months.
I have only managed to find them in 24 volt flavour. I reckon the elusive Harry The heat goes round and nicks 'em off any 12 volt vehicles before I can get my mitts on them.
Having said that got the names of a couple of places that do a kit c/w heater, pump and rheostat and sometimes skin fitting and a bit of ducting or exhaust for for around £300.
Still refusing to give up... want to find this elusive creature and wrench it from the still warm carcass of a BT van with my very own hands for about £80 (same as the 24 volkt types)
I know of a guy locally and both he and his brother have boats. I believe his brother bought up a load of either the vans or the heaters and was fitting them to boats. I know because he offered me one which I will probably buy. I believe they are 12 volts and he either knows of the bits required or sells those too. I think they had to either remove or reprogramme the timers, as BT only allowed them to be operable for limited periods, so as not to encourage people to sit in the vans all day and do no work.IHMO of course. I will find out what I can and post the answers.

On D3LC models, to convert 24v to 12v, change combustion blower (pt no .25 1906 99 20 00), control unit (pt no 251895 50 00 03), Thermostat (pt no 301 00 154) and glow plug (pt no 25 1830 01 01 00). Mind you cost of new parts may be prohibitive.
Chris, local is South Broads but I am up in Scotland for the week. I will see if I can contact him when I return. The comment about the control unit above may well be true but I believe these are removed/replaced.
