Update on Yachting Monthly and PBO

I can'tbelieve that Face Book is a good way to go. My guess is that I am not alone in having nothing whatever to do with Face Book which I think is for kids with nothing better to fill their lives.

You are a little bit out of touch with the under 55 demographic then.

Question: how could we make use of the forums? FB works for well for YW, as we have a lot of visual content and video that is shareable and so works well on that platform, and links to web posts make a signficant contribution to specific areas of our web content (as opposed to ybw.com, which is where the forums sit). We will be doing more with the other titles too and I'm thinking of creating a PBO 'Build, make, fix' closed group. But I'm very well aware of how much great advice and knowledge there is here, so I know that from a magazine perspective we're missing out. How and what would you like us post/think we should?

What about the other way round - is there some way we could make more use in the mags of the huge range of information and expertise here?

Thanks again for all the comments - all read and being inwardly digested.

Elaine

As has already been said, updating the forum software so that video and pictures work properly would be step one.

But then, you've just told me that you like my comments. But I wouldn't have ever known you'd even read them, as there is almost zero interaction from the writing staff on these forums. I can understand why given what happened with TB, but I'd suggest that in these days of social media (which of course this is) this might be a mistake...

Then if you want to drive FB traffic to your own forums, do what SA do. Post a tease on FB with a link to the longer article / discussion on a forum post here. Most "what do you make of this" posts from the people who are in charge of SA run to many pages of replies. Make it appear that the real debate happens here, not on FB.

Then I dunno, maybe things like a YM or YW version of the spot the boat thing (probably without the people in them...) would be good. Whenever SA publish a "do you know what this is" of some new project or restoration or something there's always heaps of interest. Don't just copy them, but there has to be a twist that could work for you.

But mainly, from a YW subscriber point of view, just get back to being the place that breaks sailing news.

The "kids" who were at uni when Facebook first appeared and as such were the early adopters (it being originally limited to people with a university email address) are now in their 30s and some will be starting to think about buying a boat.

Facebook's users are spread pretty widely, although there is a bit of a drop off after age 55. I am told that people in their 20s are starting to see FB as being a bit old hat, and whilst they may have an account, they primarily use different social media.

The Sailing and Cruising Scotland group is a good example of how much interaction you can get via fb- but you lose control of the system and all the revenues if you go down this route. So consider fb as advertising to draw people back to this forum. And improve this forum! There are much better software packages available now.

So you are ignorant of the fact that it is not all "social". There are closed user groups on Facebook with technical topics, such as (to take one at random!) long-horn beetles. Quite like a forum, really...

Mike.

Have you seen what they're posting about this on the PBO forum ?!!!

+1. I was on Facebook a million years ago, and got a flaming from someone who I didn't know, and left immediately. It needs to be a platform that's more ubiquitous

That's not really a new development - it's a few years ago now I heard Facebook described as "where you go to say 'Happy Birthday' to your aunt" :)

Jeez the older generation scare me ....

Get a grip fellas they only know what you give out yet you want to know everything for free and right now. Go figure.....

Farcebook means giving everything about yourself to Zuckerberg.... for free.
There is no way I will do that.

There's a simple solution, just create a fake Facebook profile. Then you can see what other people are posting, without giving your precious secrets away!

I agree with many of the posters above in that the easy ability to upload and display photos and videos are what makes a forum even more engaging and allows more advertising revenue to be generated. I mod on one such forum which is for open canoeing and is the best in the UK and beyond. The blogs section where we put up details of our trips with photos and descriptions is the most popular section. I have frequently thought about doing it on here for our trips from days to summer cruises but the lack of photos make it pointless. The age old adage "This Thread Is Pointless Without Photos" is sooooo true! This canoe forum has a voluntary £5 annual contribution (not a subscription) with the only two benefits being the ability to post for sale items and the warm glow of belonging.

As to Facebook, great for immediate news dissemination or arranging meets etc. but try looking for that bit of information that was posted by someone last week or before. That is where a forum is at its best. YBW should be advertised and promoted as somewhere to get technical information and help. This needs a simpler and easier search function to be able to look for words but also to exclude certain words to narrow results.

I have always found it a bit strange the price charged by TIME for photocopies of old articles from past mags, usually more than buying the whole mag in the first place! Surely there is a place and time when these old articles could be viewable via the forum for contributing members. I, possibly like many others have scanned to pdf many articles from the mags over the years which are useful for technical information. It is a shame that this lo-cost resource TIME has is not being used.
Whether we like it or not, the future is electronic and this forum is a fantastic resource which TIME should be promoting with advertising (BOATY!) to pay for it just like the mags.
How long is it since I was last a subscriber to PBO and YM? Probably 5-6 years. Now it is too thin, too expensive and the content repeats itself. This forum however is a daily read by both me and my better half.

Has anyone said that they want personal information about YM journalists for free and right now? Incidentally, what's this "older generation" business? Someone whose first listed employment on LinkedIn started twenty four years ago is not exactly a millennial ...

I've always thought that the absence of trip reports on YBW was unfortunate, as you say it seems typical on Kayaking/Motorcycle/Dinghy Cruising forums. It would be good if more of us shared our trips so we can vicariously share in each others adventures.

You can use a photo hosting site like tinypic.com and embed those images in forum posts. Doesn't insert image work? I'm sure I've used it.

But at least they understand Facebook ...

An excellent idea and something that would make a payment for forum membership infinitely more attractive.
