Universal Marina Hamble River

I remember a few years ago Paul was refused permission to work on my boat at Endeavour Quay in Gosport as his indemnity insurance was below their requirements. I paid for Paul's increased premium. My point is that some marinas do check contractors paperwork and they do make life difficult.

Its all about protecting on site services, but surely if they are under performing then replace them with someone better, don't try to force customers into using them.
I was in a marina on the east coast that did just that, I moved away, the marina is now half full.

One of the questions I asked at the Premier Marina Gosport was, do they allow outside contractors in? I would not have gone there if they did not.

As it happens I have booked Paul to do a service early October.

I think it is Berthon Marina where I have been told they have a no outside contractors policy. You have to use the onsite services,

I guess though that if you know this before you take a berth its not so bad

I was at Berthon for quite a few years and I often had occasion to think about this policy. In the end I thought it was a positive, despite probably costing me money. The work was done well and the protection of the onsite facilities allowed Berthon to have an apprenticeship scheme so that there will be a next generation of good marine engineers, and jobs for and filled by properly skilled people.

If I did, I am quietly pleased to have done my bit to subsidise the future in that way.

I remember This well Terry , at the time I must point out that the 2 million cover I had was well within the requirements for both Premier and MDL , the 2 main operators , but as Endeavour was then a private operator they wanted 5 million, at the time I did think they were doing this deliberately to keep out contractors and for boat owners to use there on site contractors , you obviously knew the best plan of action. Since it has been taken over by Premier I have had no problems working there at all, and all insurance companies accept that 5 million is the normal amount required.

It's a shame Endeavour Quay / Gosport marina don't pay as much attention to their own security arrangements as we discovered when the boat was broken into whilst in there for annual works. They have a handy ladder in place (fire escape) to allow people access from the Gosport ferry gardens and the CCTV is a token waste of lime.

Henry :)

Hmmmm, doesn’t sound good Henry. Hope all quick fixable?

Yes. I was away on holiday and sadly Endeavour / Gosport didn’t seem overly bothered failing to report to poilce as I asked them and they promised. Once I returned and embarassed them face to face they had to report it.

No lasting damage was done and there was nothing of concern stolen. Certainly it could have been a lot worse. Eventually we will find out who did it thanks to some forensic evidence but it might take a while....

Henry :).
