unfriendly yacht people

Ah, I think it might be my comments to which you refer.

Somebody using your username made a comment to the effect that all Ibizans were unfriendly. This is the essence of racism: the bad characteristics of some members of a groups are attached to all memebrs of that group. And hence I attacked the poster, albeit not harshly.

I actually did it by lashing at "accountants" - to which you (or your mum) then took offence. But - do you see - it was *precisely* the style in which the original post had been constructed, around an unfounded prejudice. Your parents took exception to the very same sort of comments that they were making about others. Because, of course, such cruel generalisations are casual and invariably untrue.

I don't really think all accountants have a bad attitude - but perhaps your parents do, or at least they did in those posts. I hope you aren't copying them with similarly casual and shallow thinking that "all yacht people" are like this or that?

You (and your parents) will have a better time here or anywhere else if you tread carefully, and perhaps try use the same language as those whom you meet. Do you and your parents speak any spanish, I wonder? Maybe, maybe not. Either way, IPC forums don't much seem to use the language of racism, hence their less than warm welcome here, same as Ibiza.

Speaking of generalizing and not, I'm glad to see a consensus that prefers avoiding stereotypes. I'm especially grateful as a Yank, because a few of us have given others of us a bad name--just as a few Parisians in the past made me shudder and hesitate to revisit that glorious city, and a particularly cold wet day made me wonder why I'd picked London for a holiday--though never the people there or elsewhere in GB (I had a grand month and can't wait to return). At school in Italy, I fell in love with the place and the people, though on a return visit a few years ago ran into too many zingari. So. There are good and bad among us all, including good and bad accountants as well as folk from Ibizia.

Good answer from tcm, especially the suggestion that one try to speak the language of whatever place he or she visits, including a forum. I'm very grateful that the moderator translated the original post, or I'd have been completely lost.

Probably the 'goth' phase....

Yotty types, in general, away from tourist areas !!!!.. are usually very friendly.. comments like 'I didnt get where I am' etc from anybody usually results in a big yawn and tells a lot about the person - and usually it is not compatible with the general live aboard scene.
The last thing liveaboards usually do is talk about their 'profession' because its immaterial, its the skills they have to share that are important.

Oh, and PlanB, I forgive ya, lol, a. it was never mentioned when we met, and b. you are really nice guys... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I dunno about Ibizans - but we spent a couple of years on french canals and found the French fine - simply don't recognise your experience.....

Entirely agree! We simply LOVE cruising in France and have met, and maintained friendships with, many people there.

Sadly, I have watched, with shame, the behaviour of some Brits (and others) when they've been speaking and dealing with the French. Why these people feel they have the right to be totally obnoxious because THEY don't take the trouble to speak the host's language, baffles me.

Hopefully, these types will be 'put off' by their 'awful' experiences and and stay away!!

Seconded !!!

We are in a non English speaking area.. we always, from the beginning, attempted Spanish.. now we have been here a while, we CAN speak basic Spanish.. it is always appreciated.. Some Brits - mostly the July August brigade don't want to or wont attempt to. That leads, quite rightly, to animosity from the locals.. we never had that problem but see it often.
We get the large cruise ships here (UK mainly) .. the blatant stuck up English idiots that sometimes come of these beasts are unbelievable.. if they cant make themselves understood in English, they just raise their voices and gesticulate. Ignorance imho.. again, when in Rome... the English gold and garlic wallers.. Broth heads mostly..
Same in France, we had school french, but good enough.. never had a problem at all.. very courteous people.

Our Spanish accent is now more Galecian now lol... but hey ...

Thirded-absolutely.

Slight fred-drift here but you know...call me an old-fashioned colonialist but I can't see how English, spoken slowly enough & loudly enough, couldn't be understood anywhere in the world.!
BRING. THE. TEA.!
How could someone not understand that.!

Guys, you're trying to talk to a teenager - trust me, brick wall /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

And yes, even a 17-year old!

I'd love an argument with her, though, especially in ibiza, I see a long drinking weekend coming up! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I'd quite like to whip out my own extensive vocabulary that even the Urban dictionary would be proud of in response but unfortunately I currently dont have the time /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
