I suspect there'd be no need. I reckon most commodores in the Royal Navy started life sucking down on a silver spoon. Still, nice to see him navigating through his mid-life crisis so gracefully.
When I joined HMS Fisgard as an RN Apprentice, the eight training divisions were named after men who joined as Artificers and retired as Admirals. :)

I thought this was a photo of the guy leaving the job as Commander RN strike force? What has that got to do with UKHO? or is he moving there now?
It's my understanding he's swopping one job for another. As they do.
And getting his hands on a rather fine - if not 'exotic' - car in the process.
Good on him!

My guess:

In the RN of Nelson and later the tradition was that a senior officer leaving a ship (especially a Flag Officer) would be rowed ashore by his officers. This created a tradition of celebrating the departure of a CO.

Today many officers command shore establishments and the opportunity for being ceremoniously rowed ashore has all but evaporated - that and the RN not having rowing cutters spread about as in the past!

So, in order to recognise the tradition establishments now look for modern variations of reflecting the tradition, and use imagination to find new ways to "see the old man ashore".

So, my guess: is that there was a collection from the ship's company to hire that car for the day so said officer could be "rowed ashore" in style.
