In Cowes last Saturday there were more than a few glorious examples of the boatbuilders art, loads of average boats with class and a few that you just look at and think WHY???

It got me to thinking about the most unattractive production yacht ever made.

Now I'm sorry if this gives offence, and I know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder but, my nomination is...

The Westerly Vulcan. Can anybody top that?

Can't picture the Vulcan, but the Westerly Riviera and Konsort Duo are probably in the same style. The latter is definitely a case of taking a very reasonable base model and screwing it up completely.

Whenever I see them, I wonder if we should insist that boat designs have to go through a Planning Permission process first.

Same applies to certain cars, the Fiat Multipla being the best example.

All IMHO of course!

For cars someone has already mentioned that Joseph Merrick of car design the fiat Multipla but as to boats, I always thought that although roomy below, the NB Virgo Voyager was ugly to behold as was the Tomahawk 25 and the Macwester 26 (especially in green). Then of course there's ANY ferro boat ever built.

Re: No contest

I quite like Amel's boats.

I often sit and ponder why and how there is such a variety of solutions to the simple problem of keeping a few people safely afloat on a sailboat.

Have to agree with all of the previously mentioned posts with the Macgreggor definitely the worst but heres a few more that spring to mind Atlantic Clipper ,Beneteau Evasion ,Buckler (See A to Z in YM series) some of the early Dufours with tumbleholme and flush decks. However don't forget they are all someones pride and joy!

Re: No contest

Funny. I brought some non-boaty people to the Paris Boat Show. They ALL preferred the Amel.

Re: Ferro - I can\'t agree

I can't agree about ferro. Keep your eyes open for one called Crystal Stream built by Peter Allington who now looks after the Tamar Barge Shamrock for the National Maritime Museum at Cotehele. You would never know she was ferro, and she was lovely to behold. He sold a few years ago to raise money to build a house!
