Can anybody identify this type of shaft seal? It’s on the rudder post of a Colvic UFO34 with a 2inxh stainless steel rudder post.
It is one piece of packing formed in a circular ring. It is definitely not cut from a length of square section flax packing material. It appears to have a chamfer on the upper and lower outer edges. It looks like it is made from something like asbestos (might not be asbestos). The top section of the bronze packing assembly tightens down with studs and nuts.
The rudder is out of the boat so think it would be a good opportunity to replace the packaging material.
