I am planning for a 1 week sailing end of August in the Tuscany archipel with the family (including 3 children). Elba seems to have nice anchorages, so that looks ok. However can anyone advice about the availability of good protected anchorages on the other islands of the archipel or the Toscan coastline ? Can one find relatively quit and protected places to anchor ?

And last : any website or book that covers this topic ?

We were there last year. It gets very hot, marinas rather than anchorages become attractive because of the running water. Porto Barratti (near Piombino) is a nice anchorage with laid moorings if you need them and fantastic staff (on the laid moorings). Capraia is a really beautiful island with anchorages and an attractive harbour (you can anchor just outside) you can also moor on the ferry quay outside the harbour on the days the ferry doesn't come. Generally the tuscan coast ports are shallow. Rod Heikells pilot is pretty good. Don't be tempted by the east coast of corsica except for Bastia its very dull although the south and west is fantastic.

Hi We were ther about 2 weeks ago and visited Elba. Portoferriao was very sheltered. Plenty of bays to anchor in around the Island. But it looked very touristy and will be crowded in the summer, and expensive. A night at Azzorro would be Euro 78! if u can get a space. We are currently near La Spezia but it is a long hike (about 70 miles) north and not a lot of interest between Elba and La Spezia. Let me know if u want more info. Brian

Thanks Brian and Lilian for the answers. Our intention is to sleep in bays (anchorage) rather then in ports to save on port costs. Need to be sure to have well protected bays as not to have to many problems for the children to sleep at nigth.

We intend to do a couple of hours sailing a day alternated with some walks/visits on land and some swimming to have a good balance for the kids.

So in your opinion one week in Elba/Capraia/Porto Baratti with overnight stay on anchor in a bay is a feasible good program and will be a fun and memorable holiday ?

Thanks again for your input.

We did a 7 day Charter there last April. Elba is a super island and Portoferriao a beautiful town. I also agree that Capraia is worth a visit - very interesting - as is St. Florent at the north of Corsica.
In 8 days we went from the mainland to Elba then Bastia, Macinnagio, St.Florent, Capraia, Portoferriao and back to the mainland.
Have to admit that all bar one night were spent in harbours rather than at anchor. Everywhere was pretty empty at that time of year.
Hope you have a great time.
